Jeffrey Herlings Re-Closes In On MX2 Points Lead In Bulgaria

Posted:

Jeffrey Herlings moved back to with-in four points of the championship lead at a mud soaked track at Sevlievo, Bulgaria on Sunday sealing the MX2 GP for the KTM factory team.

Herlings was second on the grid for the opening MX2 moto but it was teammate Jordi Tixier who rocketed out of the gates, took the holeshot and quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field.

While Tixier was in charge in the first half of the race, Herlings sat inside the top five among a group of riders who have been his biggest challengers this season.

Swiss rider Arnaud Tonus caught Tixier with eleven minutes left in the opening moto. On his KTM 250 SX-F Herlings moved up to third, made the pass on Tixier and set out to close down on Tonus. Tonus then crashed after a mistake in the closing stages and handed the win to Herlings.

There was no doubt about Herlings‰Ûª intentions in race two as he quickly moved into the lead on lap three. The Dutch teenager was challenged by Tonus throughout the race but he was unmoved and went on to seal his double race win.

"I am trying to fight back after my injury problems and now we have won four of four GPs this year and we're only four points away from the leader so I'll try to keep on charging." Herlings stated. "I struggled with arm pump in the first moto but it was okay after that.

"The track today was difficult for me. I'm not used to these conditions and especially with the rain but we showed that even on a bad day we can still win."

Kawasaki's Tonus held on to finish second in the second moto and in doing so rounded out the day second overall.

‰ÛÏIt was a good GP for me." Tonus admitted. "Already on Saturday I had a good qualifying race and had fun on the bike.

"I was disappointed with the little crash while I was leading the first race, but it was good to see that I can fight with Jeffrey and I learned a lot in this moto.

"In the second race I gave everything to catch Herlings; we were very close but I made a few small mistakes and he won it. Twice second is a good result and I still have the red plate.

"Now I will work in the sand; I love riding there and I will go to Valkenswaard determined to win this GP.‰Û

Sevlievo was a confidence-boosting outing for Tixier, who finished with a 3-3 result for overall third, even though he was hampered by a slight hand injury.
