The noise, the atmosphere, the cliffsides and the chaos – it can only be the MXGP of Trentino, and once again, the fans packed the iconic Il Ciclamino circuit for round five of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship.
Although rain was forecast, it arrived with perfect timing, just as the first MX2 race formed on the gate, transforming conditions after a dusty, wind-swept morning into a technical, demanding circuit that produced outstanding racing across both classes.
In MXGP, Jeffrey Herlings powered to his 114th career Grand Prix victory with a relentless charge through the field in both motos, going 1-2 on the day, while Tim Gajser thrilled the hillside crowd with a popular race two win for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP. Tom Vialle secured third overall despite a crash, as championship leader Lucas Coenen endured another difficult Trentino outing but retained the red plate.
In MX2, Sacha Coenen delivered a flawless performance with a perfect 1-1-1 weekend to claim his fifth career GP victory, ahead of a consistent Guillem Farres and a hard-charging Mathis Valin, who completed the podium after a strong comeback ride in race two.
MXGP
The morning Warm-Up saw Jeffrey Herlings set the pace ahead of Romain Febvre and Maxime Renaux, while championship leader Lucas Coenen was a low-key 22nd.
Race one fired into life with Febvre grabbing the holeshot, leading Tom Vialle and Tim Gajser, while Coenen made his move forward early before disaster struck. After moving into second, the Belgian crashed heavily just after Pit Lane, remounting deep in the field and dropping further after another mistake on the opening lap.
At the front, Febvre controlled the early stages, but Herlings was on a charge. Starting outside the top ten, the Dutchman cut through the field, moving into sixth by lap two and continuing his charge forward. He passed Andrea Adamo, then closed on the leading trio, setting the fastest lap of the race as he hunted them down.

By lap 13, Herlings had surged past Gajser for third, then executed a decisive outside move on Vialle to take second. Two laps later, he pulled the same move on Febvre, snaring the lead and quickly stretching his advantage. From there, he controlled the race to win by over five seconds.
Behind him, Febvre held on for second despite pressure, with Vialle completing the podium ahead of Gajser. Renaux climbed to fifth, while Adamo, Kay de Wolf, and Oriol Oliver all impressed inside the top eight. Coenen salvaged a rare 12th after his early crash.
Race two saw a very different start, with De Wolf grabbing his first MXGP holeshot ahead of Coenen, Gajser, Vialle, and Renaux. Coenen quickly took control, pushing past De Wolf to lead, while Herlings again found himself buried in the pack and forced to fight forward.
The race turned dramatically when Coenen crashed out of the lead at the top of the circuit, handing the advantage to Gajser. The Slovenian seized the opportunity and rode flawlessly out front, while Herlings once again carved through the field, moving into second and applying pressure late in the race.

Despite the charge, Gajser held firm to take a popular victory, his first MXGP win for Yamaha and his first since this round last year. Coenen recovered to third, holding off De Wolf and Renaux, while Vialle salvaged sixth after a heavy crash mid-race.
Overall, Herlings’ 1-2 score secured the Grand Prix win ahead of Gajser (4-1) and Vialle (3-6), with De Wolf narrowly missing the podium in fourth and Renaux completing the top five.
Speaking after the race, Herlings said, “I think the results don’t really show the speed I had this weekend, especially after the crash yesterday and a small issue with the bike. I had to come through the field in both races, from around fifteenth to first in the first one and again pushing hard in the second. I felt like I had the pace, but once you get to the top guys, it’s not easy to find a way past, especially on a tight track like this. Overall, a 1-2 on the day is good for the championship, and I’m really thankful to the whole team for the work they put in.”

Gajser reflected on his breakthrough win, saying, “I’m super happy with this weekend, especially coming in with some broken ribs from last week and riding in a lot of pain. I didn’t expect much, so to come away with a race win and a podium means a lot. In the second race, I just gave everything I had, even though I was really feeling it physically. A big thank you to the team and the fans, because they really helped me keep pushing all the way to the end.”
Vialle added, “I had a pretty big crash in the second race that cost me a lot of time and a few positions, so I really had to work hard to come back. I felt good on the bike all weekend, and the starts were strong, which helped a lot. The track was very technical and quite slow, so you had to be creative and adapt all the time so I really enjoyed it. In the end, I’m happy to be on the podium after that crash.”
Coenen admitted it was a tough weekend at a circuit that doesn’t suit him, explaining, “Honestly, I didn’t expect too much coming into this weekend because the track doesn’t really suit my style. I had a couple of crashes in the first race and another small mistake in the second, so it wasn’t the easiest weekend. Still, I’m happy to be here, healthy and taking some points, because that’s on your bad days that you win a championship. Now we have a break, and I’ll go back to work and come back stronger.”

MX2
The MX2 action kicked off in wet conditions as rain poured down just before race one, but it made little difference to Sacha Coenen, who stormed to the holeshot and immediately checked out at the front.
Mathis Valin gave chase, with Guillem Farres and Liam Everts moving into the top four early, while championship leader Simon Langenfelder struggled outside the top ten. Behind them, Maxime Grau, Karlis Reisulis, and Kay Karssemakers squabbled inside the top seven, while Julius Mikula began a solid charge forward.
Despite the conditions, the front five remained virtually unchanged, with Coenen controlling the race to take a comfortable win ahead of Valin and Farres. Everts secured fourth, while Karlis Reisulis completed the top five. Langenfelder could only recover to 10th.
Race two saw Coenen once again grab the holeshot, but this time faced early pressure from Mikula and Grau, with Langenfelder quickly moving into contention. Everts’ race went south after a crash over the waves section, taking several riders down the order.

Mikula moved into second early, but Farres and Langenfelder worked their way forward, eventually passing the Czech rider. Grau, who had started strongly, crashed out mid-race, while Coenen continued to control proceedings despite a small crash late in the race.
Farres pushed hard to secure second, with Langenfelder third, while Mikula held on for an impressive fourth. Karlis Reisulis again delivered a strong ride in fifth, ahead of his brother Janis, while Valin recovered from a poor start to finish seventh.
The overall result saw Coenen complete a perfect weekend with 1-1 finishes, ahead of Farres (3-2) and Valin (2-7), with Mikula fourth and Karlis Reisulis fifth. Längenfelder’s sixth overall marked his first non-podium result of the season.
After the race, Coenen said, “I’m really happy to win all three races this weekend, it’s the first time I’ve done that. In the first race, I got the Fox holeshot and managed the gap, and in the second one, I felt even better with my flow. I made a mistake near the end and crashed, but I could still control it and take the win. This kind of consistency gives me a lot of confidence.”

Farres reflected on a consistent weekend, saying, “It was a solid weekend overall, and I’m happy with the points we scored in every race. The track was really difficult, especially for passing, and in the first race, I got stuck behind Mathis [Valin] and couldn’t find a way through. In the second one, I had a bad start and had to work really hard to come back to second. By the time I got there, the gap was already too big, but we salvaged good points.”
Valin added, “Yesterday was quite difficult with the track being tough for everyone. Today was better with the rain, and I felt more comfortable, especially in the first race, where I had a good flow and could stay near the front. In the second race, I got blocked after the start and had to fight back to seventh. I’m not fully happy with that one, but it’s still a podium, and we keep building step by step.”

Langenfelder admitted to a difficult weekend, explaining, “In the second race, I started to feel better again after struggling a bit with the setup and traction earlier in the weekend. We made some changes and I could finally push and get back to my normal speed. The first race was really strange because I didn’t feel comfortable at all and couldn’t ride the way I wanted. Still, I had to push hard in the second one to get those important points for the championship.”
With Trentino delivering another unforgettable chapter, both championships now head into a short break before returning to France, where the battles at the front in both MXGP and MX2 remain wide open.
