Jed Beaton Impresses At Opening Round Of 2016 NZMX Titles

Posted:

Australian Yamaha riders put the hurt on their Kiwi cousins over the weekend and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better.

One of the Australian riders to impress was Yamaha mounted Jed Beaton with the Tasmanian posting the fastest time in qualifying despite only casting his eyes on the Timaru track for the first time at the start of the weekend.

Beaton posted a time some two seconds quicker than Rangiora's Micah McGoldrick in qualifying, however, he then came to grief when another rider collided with him in the first race finishing 9th.

He rebounded with a third place finish in race two before saving his best for last, winning the final MX2 moto of the day, leaving him to claim the final step of the podium for the round.

"I really struggled with my starts all day, but finally got a good one in that last race," said Beaton. "I wasn't really surprised that I qualified so well.

"I grew up in Tasmania and it rains a lot there, so when the (well-watered) track was muddy for practice and qualifying, I was okay with it."

The Australian contingent will continue to get stronger as the 2016 New Zealand Motocross Championship continues, CDR Yamaha's Dan Reardon will join his new Australian team-mate Dean Ferris at the Altherm JCR Yamaha team to race MX1 class at Rotorua and Taupo.

before then the series is set to heat up further at round two at the Flipp's track at Himatangi, near Palmerston North, on February 28.
