Jed Beaton Dominates Canberra as ProMX Title Fights Intensify Across the Classes

Jed Beaton dominated MX1 in Canberra with a commanding double moto victory to extend his early championship lead.

The second round of the 2026 ProMX Championship at Fairbairn Park in Canberra delivered a full day of action under clear skies, headlined by another commanding performance from Jed Beaton, who extended his perfect start to the MX1 season with another double moto victory.

Beaton’s dominance was evident from the outset, topping MX1 Superpole in qualifying before carrying that momentum into the two motos. Moto one was, as Beaton described, relatively straightforward, with the Yamaha rider controlling proceedings to take a comfortable win. However, the second moto proved far more intense, particularly in the closing stages as Kyle Webster charged into contention.

“Moto one was all smooth sailing, and I was able to take a comfortable victory, which was nice, but things got a little more intense late in the second moto,” Beaton explained, revealing he initially misread the challenge behind him. “It was difficult to see the pit board as the track was super rutted in that area, and I thought it was Tanti that was behind me, and I was marking him off in some of the switchback turns.”

Defending Champion Kyle Webster showed race-winning speed in MX1, setting the fastest laps and charging late in moto two to close within striking distance of the lead, but crashes and poor starts left him second overall.

Only late in the race did Beaton realise Webster had moved into contention. “I was unaware that Kyle got past him and was closing in on me until I saw the guys hanging over the fence and then figured something was up,” he said, before responding in the final laps. “I was able to wick it back up again at the end and match Kyle’s pace and go on to win the race and make it a 1-1 day. Thanks to the team for a big effort today, the track wasn’t easy as it was so rutted, but the bike was good all day, so hats off to them.”

Webster’s second-place result came despite a frustrating day marked by raw speed and costly mistakes. After qualifying second, he took a measured approach early on a track he described as inconsistent. “The track was tricky, overwatered in sections and dry in others. I knew I had more pace but didn’t want to overcommit in qualifying,” he said.

His races, however, were compromised by poor starts and crashes. “I lost around five seconds on the opening lap and another eight seconds later in the race. When you’re setting fastest laps and still losing by 7.5 seconds, it’s frustrating,” Webster said of Moto 1. Moto 2 followed a similar pattern, with another average start and crash forcing an aggressive charge back through the field. “It feels like a missed opportunity. The speed was there, and the bike was near perfect… we just need to clean up a few areas. I’m excited for Round 3.”

Photo of motocross rider Aaron Tanti at round two of the 2026 ProMX at Canberra, ACT
Aaron Tanti returned to the MX1 podium with a composed 3-3 scorecard, running with the leaders across both motos to secure his first top-three finish since 2023.

Behind the leading duo, Aaron Tanti returned to the MX1 podium for the first time since 2023 with a consistent 3-3 performance, underlining his return to form. “Man, I don’t know how long it’s been since I have been on a motocross podium, other than it’s been too long, and it feels so good to be back,” Tanti said. “That second race I was able to hold pace with Jed for a lot of laps, and to stay in the fight that long gives me a lot of self-belief that I belong up front.”

He added that the demanding conditions required restraint. “The track was tough today, and it was easy to make a mistake and go down in the long ruts. To not crash today was a big deal for me… I felt solid all day and happy to get back on the box for myself and the team.”

Wilson Todd continued his progression with fourth overall, acknowledging both improvement and the work still required as he builds back from injury. “The bike was good, I wasn’t. I need to be better. I’m still building back after breaking my leg late last year, and I only returned to riding in late January. This weekend was a step forward, but there’s more work to do.”

Todd Waters completed the top five, while Zachary Watson battled through illness to claim sixth overall. Luke Zielinski impressed in seventh, with Dean Ferris salvaging eighth despite crashes in both motos. It was also a mixed debut weekend for Nathan Crawford on Honda machinery, finishing fourth in moto one before a DNF in moto two.

With two rounds complete, Beaton now leads the MX1 Championship by 14 points over Webster.

Kayd Kingsford claimed the MX2 overall with a 1-2 scorecard to reclaim the points lead after a composed and calculated performance.

MX2

In MX2, it was Kayd Kingsford who emerged on top, taking a 1-2 scorecard to secure the overall win and reclaim the championship lead from teammate Alex Larwood. Kingsford capitalised on Larwood’s early struggles to claim his first-ever MX2 moto win before managing the second race to lock in the round.

“I was making a few mistakes (while leading moto two) and I saw Alex coming up behind me, and knowing he had a bad first moto, I was pretty well off (my pace) so he got around me,” Kingsford said. “I started to follow his lines, which enabled me to ride smoother. I knew second would get it done for me, so I rode my own race from there.”

Photo of motocross rider Dylan Walsh at round two of the 2026 ProMX at Canberra, ACT
Dylan Walsh overcame a heavy Moto 1 crash to salvage second overall in MX2, regrouping with a strong second moto to secure another podium finish on a tough day.

Larwood’s day started poorly with qualifying issues that carried into Moto 1. “I got a pretty bad start, and then a rider went down in front of me… I ended up clipping his gear shifter with my rear wheel, which bent it back, meaning I was virtually stuck in second gear for the remainder of the moto,” he explained. He rebounded strongly in Moto 2, however, taking the win. “I had a point to prove for everyone and I think I performed extremely well.”

KTM teammates Dylan Walsh and Byron Dennis both finished the round on 38 points, with Walsh securing second overall after overcoming a heavy Moto 1 crash. “Canberra was a tough day, but also a positive one in the end… We’ll take second overall after what was a difficult day,” Walsh said. Dennis showed speed throughout, including the fastest qualifying time, but admitted inconsistency cost him. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and work on getting two consistent motos together.”

Ryan Alexanderson and Larwood rounded out the MX2 top five overall.

Photo of motocross rider Hayden Draper at round two of the 2026 ProMX at Canberra, ACT
Hayden Draper delivered a flawless MX3 outing with two race wins to take the round victory and move into the championship lead.

MX3

In MX3, Hayden Draper delivered a composed and calculated performance to claim a double moto victory and take over the championship lead. Racing at the venue for the first time, Draper focused on building into the track rather than overpushing early.

“We only really get four laps to learn the track before we get into qualifying, so even though I wasn’t the fastest, I felt like I was the guy who would only get better,” Draper said. “I didn’t panic and wasn’t going to try and overdo it… I stayed consistent, off the dirt, and ended up with a great result, and I’m pumped to get the round win.”

Riley Burgess finished second overall with a 2-4 result, while Cooper Rowe secured third. Hayden Downie and Jobe Dunne completed the top five, while it was a difficult round for Jack Deveson, whose early promise unravelled with mistakes and crashes across both motos.

Photo of motocross rider Blake Bohannon at rounf two of the 2026 ProMX at Canberra, ACT
Blake Bohannon continued his unbeaten run in the MX85 Cup with another double moto win to extend his advantage in the standings.

MX85

In the MX85 Cup, Blake Bohannon continued his dominance with another double moto victory. After fighting through an average start in race one to build a 45-second lead, he backed it up in race two by managing early pressure before pulling away to win by 25 seconds. His combined winning margin across the two motos was an emphatic 1:16.426.

With two rounds complete, Bohannon holds a 25-point lead heading into the final round in Toowoomba. Liam Millard and Koby Binnion rounded out the overall podium, while Brax Pollard, Jayce Stocker and Maxi Harris also claimed podium finishes across the motos.

Round three of the 2026 ProMX Championship heads to Gillman on May 10, where the early title contenders will look to build on their momentum in what is shaping as a highly competitive season across all classes.
