Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson has won the second round of the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross Championship held in Oakland on Saturday the 15th of January.

It was Anderson’s Kawasaki team-mate Adam Cianciarulo who led the field through the opening turn, followed by Rocky Mountain ATV KTM’s Shane McElrath and Anderson.

Anderson, along with Redbull KTM’s Aaron Plessinger, both quickly despatched of McElrath, and by lap four, the duo worked their way by Cianciarulo to take control of the race.

Plessinger was able to keep Anderson in his sights for the majority of the race, but in the closing stages, Anderson was able to skip away to take a comfortable win, his first win since his championship-winning year in 2018.

Plessinger came home in second spot, followed by Troy Lee Designs GasGas rider Justin Barcia.

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Eli Tomac worked his way forward throughout the race to finish in 4th ahead of Rockstar Husqvarna’s Malcolm Stewart in 5th, with Tomac’s teammate Dylan Ferrandis in 6th.

2021 champion Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb had to settle for a 7th place finish while opening round winner, Honda HRC rider, Ken Roczen, suffered a big crash in the whoops early in the race and was only able to recover to finish with a 13th place finish.

Barcia’s second straight podium result lifted him to the top of the points standings, just three points ahead of Anderson and Webb, who are tied for second spot.

After two rounds of racing, the top nine riders are only separated by ten points.

In the 250 class, round two was a similar story to the opening round, with Christian Craig putting in a flawless display to take his second win of the season.

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Jo Shimoda led the field early; however, a big crash in the whoops handed the race lead to Craig, with Shimoda’s Kawasaki teammate, Seth Hammaker, moving into second position.

Like the opening round, Troy Lee Design’s Gas Gas rider Michale Mossiman tipped over, while Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence once again had to work through the field after an average start.

At race end, Craig, for the second straight week, won by 5.6 seconds, ahead of Lawrence, who was able to make a late-race move by Hammaker for second spot, with Hammaker holding down third place.

Round 3 of the championship heads to San Diego next Saturday, the 22nd of January.
