Hollis scrapes ahead for AORC win number two

Posted:

Ballard's Yamaha Off Road Team rider Chris Hollis was again on top of the Yamaha Australian Off Road Championships outright podium today following an epic battle with team mate Jarrod Bewley and GHR Honda Racing newcomer Peter Boyle.
The trio swapped the lead all day and ended up finishing within 1.7 seconds of each other and about 50 seconds ahead of fourth place - three-time winner of the championships AJ Roberts. "It was really intense racing today," Hollis said. "[Bewley, Boyle and I] went into the final lap with only about three seconds separating us... I had a good lap and I was able to move up and win by 1.4 seconds. "There was a lot of pressure today, we were all so close and we really didn't know who had won. "I had a crash this morning which set me back a little bit but I am really glad I was able to work my way back up and win again, and on my home track which is awesome." Hollis, who was the local favourite as the opening rounds were held at Port Macquarie, was interviewed by NBN and Prime television today for stories tonight and tomorrow night. Hollis also beat the record 240 competitors to win the outright and Yamaha Championship E2 Class honours for the first round of the championships yesterday. Bewley, who had lead for a few laps in the beginning of the day, finished a mere .3 of a second ahead of Boyle, who had also been in the lead before dropping time to the Yamaha duo and having a crash. "I am really happy for Chris to win. He is riding really well and he deserved the win," Bewley said. "I felt like I rode well and I'm going to be working really hard to try and win the next one... I am going to try and get away from work more so I can train more and keep riding as much as possible before the [Australian Four Day Enduro]." Fifth outright today was Incite Graphics rider Toby Price, who put in some blistering, pack- packleading times. "I have never ridden an enduro, I rode in the bush for about 15-minutes last week and took out a lot of trees... that's the only experience I've had," Price said. Boyle, who is in his first full season of enduro competition following several years in motocross, finished fourth outright to team mate Roberts in the opening round yesterday. "I hope I am on the podium many more times... I enjoy enduro and I am looking forward to racing them all season," Boyle said. "I find them a lot more laid back than motocross." "Riding on the GHR Honda team with AJ and [Ben Grabham] is fantastic, Glenn and the boys are a great help and I really appreciate their support." Boyle also won the Motul Championship E1 Class honours - Motorex KTM Off Road Racing's Ben Kearney and MSC Kawasaki Team's Damian Smith were again second and third. Young up-and-comer, Sutto's KTM Alpinestar ADB rider Geoff Braico, took the win today in the CTI Championship E3 Class, ahead of Yamaha Queensland Off Road Team's Kirk Hutton and TM Bel-Ray Racing's Andrew Lloyd. Husqvarna Racing Team's Darren Lloyd won the class on Saturday, Hutton was second and Braico third. Record numbers of junior riders also attended the event. Chad Reed's cousin, GMR KTM's Jason Reed, was the fastest both days in Renthal Junior Lites. Rounds three and four will be held at Conondale in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland on May 17 and 18, rounds five and six at Wonthaggi in Victoria on June 21 and 22, seven and eight at Nowra (NSW) on July 12 and 13, rounds nine and 10 at Broadford (VIC) on August 2 and 3 and the final rounds at Cessnock (NSW) on August 16 and 17.
