The temperatures stayed high, and so did the incredible atmosphere at Crossdromo Miravalle, with the classic Italian hard-pack circuit above Montevarchi delivering plenty of stories at the MXGP of Italy.
Returning to Grand Prix duty for the first time in two decades, the venue was packed out across the hillside and delivered a true old-school world championship spectacle for the fans who had waited so long for its return.
The track was heavily prepared to manage the dust that naturally builds when a circuit is baked in the summer heat, and on the day of the Summer Solstice, it still produced red-hot racing. A brief rain shower between motos only added another layer of difficulty, with traction and rhythm constantly shifting across both classes.
MXGP
Morning warm-up set the tone with Jeffrey Herlings topping the session late ahead of Tim Gajser and Romain Febvre, and when race one fired into life, it immediately became a heavyweight battle at the front.
It was Herlings and returning teammate Tom Vialle locked together in the Holeshot charge, with Herlings just edging ahead up the opening hill to take control. Behind them, Maxime Renaux slotted into third, with Calvin Vlaanderen and home favourite Alberto Forato rounding out the early top five.
Drama struck immediately for Gajser, who was caught in first-corner congestion involving Andrea Adamo and Jan Pancar. A front-end issue caused by contact with a foot peg forced a pit lane stop for a wheel change, effectively dropping him nearly a lap down and ending any chance of repeating his winning form from qualifying.

At the front, Renaux kept Herlings under constant pressure while Lucas Coenen began a patient but relentless charge through the pack. The teenager picked off Romain Febvre, Forato, Oriol Oliver, Adamo and Pancar in successive laps, showing remarkable composure for a 19-year-old carrying the red plate.
By lap seven, Coenen was already into fifth, and just two laps later, he had surged past Vialle and Calvin Vlaanderen to move into third, rapidly closing on the leaders. Up front, Herlings absorbed relentless pressure from Renaux, but the Dutchman held firm as Coenen arrived late to the fight, securing a hard-fought race one win from Renaux and Coenen in a tightly packed finish.
Race two flipped the script early as Adamo grabbed the Holeshot to roar the home crowd into life, with Gajser immediately on his rear wheel looking to recover from the opening moto disaster. Herlings, Coenen, Renaux and Vialle all slotted in behind, setting up another high-pressure battle at the front.
Herlings again showed aggression in the opening corners, briefly dropping and regaining positions in the chaos before settling into third behind Adamo and Gajser. What followed was a prolonged tactical standoff, with the front group repeatedly testing lines but unable to make a clean move stick as the race settled into rhythm.

The decisive moment came when Gajser forced a pass on Adamo, but the KTM rider ran wide and went off track, allowing both Herlings and Coenen through in one sequence. From there, the leading trio locked into a controlled battle to the flag, with Gajser taking the race win ahead of Herlings and Coenen to complete a dramatic swing in fortunes across both motos.
The result saw Herlings finish the day at the top of the points with Coenen second and Maxime Renaux back on the box with third. Coenen dropped a mere seven points to Herlings in the championship race but still holds a comanding 56 point lead at the mid-point of the championship/
After the race, Herlings reflected on a weekend of pressure, risk and execution at the front: “That isn’t really a track that suits me, but we got two good starts and I made some good passes early-on in race two. It was tough out there, but the track was much better today and even though we were racing on conditions that I’m not the most comfortable on, I still was happy with my one-two and my fourth win of the season. The team have worked so hard, and it’s great to get the victory and just hopefully keep this momentum going.”

Coenen, meanwhile, came away satisfied with a solid podium across difficult conditions and intense race craft, saying, “I’m happy to be standing here on the podium. Coming from the US, I wasn’t expecting much here. When I went out for the first lap, I looked at the team like, this isn’t going to be good. In race one, I had a bad jump and was almost last into the first corner, but I made some good passes and worked my way back to the front. In the second race, I had a better start, and Jeffrey and I were battling back and forth. You don’t want to make a big mistake, you have to be smart and play it cool, and that’s what I did. At the end, I had a small issue with my goggles, but I was happy to finish third with those two guys ahead of me.”
Renaux completed the podium after a physically demanding weekend, describing both the pace and pressure in detail, ““It was a really tough day. The first moto was very positive and I felt like my pace was strong from the start. Unfortunately, I’m still dealing with a virus of some sort and that caught up with me as the day went on. By the second moto, I just didn’t have anything left physically, which was frustrating because I knew the speed was there. It’s disappointing when your body won’t let you perform at the level you know you’re capable of, but that’s part of racing sometimes. Despite that, I’m really happy to come away with another podium. Now, the focus is on recovering properly, getting back to full strength, and coming back even stronger next weekend in Portugal.””

MX2
MX2 began with warm-up pace from Guillem Farres, ahead of Liam Everts and Janis Martins Reisulis, before race one immediately turned chaotic at the front.
The Red Bull KTM duo of Sacha Coenen and Simon Längenfelder launched together, but Längenfelder grabbed the Holeshot while Coenen ran into early trouble, making a mistake and then running wide near the pit lane to drop several positions.
Farres quickly capitalised and moved into the lead, beginning to control the moto while Längenfelder, Everts and Valin formed the chase group. Coenen recovered strongly through the pack, re-entering the fight inside the top six before continuing his climb.
Farres made key passes on Valerio Lata and Mikula before taking full control at the front and never relinquishing it, while Coenen completed a strong recovery to second ahead of Längenfelder.
Race two again began with Längenfelder taking the holeshot, but Coenen immediately powered past on the opening climb to take control of the moto. Behind them, Everts, Valin, McLellan and Farres began shaping the battle for the podium.

Coenen initially looked set to control the race, but McLellan produced one of the rides of the weekend, methodically working forward, passing Everts, then capitalising on a mistake from Valin before closing rapidly on the leaders. He eventually swept around the outside of Coenen to take the lead and secure a standout race win.
Coenen regrouped to finish second and secure the overall victory with a 2-2 scoreline, while Farres recovered strongly to finish fifth after earlier drama and claimed second overall. Längenfelder struggled in the second moto and dropped outside the top ten, costing him heavily in the overall classification. McLellan’s win enough to see him third on the day.
Afterwards, Coenen summed up a controlled but challenging weekend at the front: “It was a difficult weekend, but it was the same for everyone. Even though a couple of riders were faster than me today, I managed to finish second and second and take the overall win, so I’m pretty happy with that. I also took some time to find my rhythm. In the first race, I had a good start but messed up in a corner and dropped back, then made a mistake before the pit lane and lost more places. I had to fight back and finished second behind Guillem, with my best lap coming as I passed Simon, so I had good flow at the end. I was trying to be safe out there because there were a lot of riders to get past, so I just focused on racing smart this weekend.”

Farres reflected on a weekend of speed but missed opportunity: “It was a solid day overall here in Montevarchi. In the first moto, I got a decent start and was running around seventh early on. I made some good passes, found a good rhythm, and worked my way up to the lead, which is where I finished, and it was great to get another race win. Unfortunately, the second moto was much more difficult. I didn’t get a good start and then crashed on the opening lap, which made life a lot harder. From there, I had to come through the field from almost last place and could only recover to fifth by the finish. It’s a little frustrating because I feel like I missed a great opportunity to fight for the overall victory, but there are still a lot of positives to take away from the weekend. The speed was there, the riding was good, and I scored solid points for the championship. Now the focus is on keeping the momentum going into the next round.”
McLellan delivered one of the standout rides of the weekend in race two, explaining his turnaround: “It was a decent weekend overall in Italy. My feeling on the bike improved every time I went out on track, and the bike was working really well all weekend, so a big thank you to the team for all of their hard work. Sunday had its ups and downs. In the first moto, I made things difficult for myself with a poor start and a crash on the opening lap, which meant I had to come through the field to finish seventh. The second moto was much better. I got a solid start, rode a smart and calculated race, and gradually worked my way to the front. Once I got into the lead, I was able to control the race and take the win. I scored some good championship points this weekend, and now the goal is to keep building on that momentum heading into the next round.”
Next weekend, the forecast is a lot more forgiving, and riders will be looking forward to getting to Agueda in Portugal for round 10.
