Hayden Mellross Not Satisfied With A2 Result Despite Brutal Heat Race Crash

Posted:

Australia's Hayden Mellross toughed it out to finish in 17th position at the third round of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross Championship held at Anaheim on Saturday night.

Heading into the weekend with a 100% strike rate in qualifying for 250SX West Main Events early into his U.S Career, Mellross racing for the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha team headed into A2 looking to continue his solid early season form.

Mellross took to the track in Heat 2 and was caught up in the brutal first turn pile up injuring his hand and knuckle when he hit the ground hard after locking handlebars with another rider.

Unable to continue as his YZ250F required major reconstruction and with only minutes between Heat 2 and the LCQ, it was all hands on deck in the pits with the team, best described as controlled-chaos, ripping parts off and replacing with new before racing back down to the gate.

A good start in the LCQ instantly put Mellross into a comfortable qualifying position and despite a final lap battle with Leib was able to cross the finish line in second position behind fellow Aussie Luke Clout to advance to the nights main event.

In the Main, Mellross made the best of a poor gate pick and passed multiple riders, though the tough Anaheim track was the biggest competitor with the whoops becoming an issue for Hayden with his swollen hand leaving him to focus on just finishing the race.

‰ÛÏI‰Ûªm not satisfied as I‰Ûªve set personal goals that I didn‰Ûªt reach,‰Û
It proved to be a tough night for Mellross's team-mate Zach Bell.
It proved to be a tough night for Mellross's team-mate Zach Bell.

Heading into the round sore but back in action after taking the previous weekend off, Bell came out swinging, figuring out the tough track quickly while logging a fast lap close to the leaders‰Ûª pace.

Bell lined up for Heat one ready to make an impact. A tricky right handed first turn meant the riders could not use their rear brakes when they charged out of the starting gate and into turn 1. Zach got pushed wide with a group of riders and despite a strong effort, crossed the line just out of a qualifying spot.

Bell like Mellross got a good start in the LCQ caming out of the first turn in second postion with the leader in sight.

After charging too hard into a corner while pushing to take the lead, Zach caught a slight bump that forced him off the track, dropping him back down the field. Despite a valiant ride, Bell came up one spot short and did not qualify for the main.

‰ÛÏI always try to look at the positives and there‰Ûªs a lot to take away from this week,‰Û
