Gozzini and Reekie win Australian Supermoto Titles

Davide Gozzini (Franzone / 747 TM 450) swept all before him in the S1 class of "The HWE Maintenance Services Australian Supermoto Championships at the Wanneroo International Kart Track, WA, Last Sunday.

The Italian won all three races in the first round on Saturday and then backed it up in reverse direction on Sunday with another three wins. He put on a display of riding skills never before seen in WA, and the crowd hung on his every move. In the S2 Gozzini's feat was emulated by Angus Reekie (Motorex KTM 505) also scoring a perfect six from six his challengers also put on some great riding but they were unable to find a way past him and could only settle for the minor placings. Gozzini, a multiple World Champion, said of his Australian Supermoto title, "Yeah, it's a strange thing for me to be Australian Supermoto Champion, I'm very happy because this maybe the last time I work with my mechanic Alberto (Bosio), so I'm happy for me, happy for Alberto, happy for TM and very happy for my good friend Joe (Grasso) he made it all happen, and without everything he did I wouldn't be here today." A happy Gozzini told me. In what was his first Australian Supermoto event in 12 months, Angus Reekie showed little affect of that fact by clinching his fifth Australian Championship when the KTM mounted rider took out the S2 class win. Not only did Reekie pick up a record fifth Australian Supermoto Championship by dominating proceedings in the S2 class but he also finished second behind Gozzini in the S1 class. This year's Australian Championship was held over two rounds on the one weekend around the Wanneroo International Kart Track and it also featured two professional International riders in current World # 2 and 10 times British Supermoto Champion Christian Iddon from England and current World # 3 Davide Gozzini and Reekie certainly showed them that he is of World Championship material.

In the S2 class, despite English rider Iddon being amongst the field of riders, Reekie blitzed his rivals aboard his KTM 505cc SMR to take out a clean sweep of qualifying and all six races to pick up what was his fifth Australian Championship in three years. The S1 class, where he rode his KTM 450cc SMR, Reekie had to play second fiddle to Gozzini in all six races but he certainly kept the Italian rider honest all the way through to the final race on the way to a second place finish overall. "To come away with a win and a second in this year's Australian Championship isn't a bad effort and one that I'm very proud of," expressed the Southern Highlands NSW based rider. "I haven't ridden Supermoto in over 12 months, so I wasn't too sure how I'd go, but once the opening practice session was completed I knew we had what it took to contend for the Australian Championships and that's exactly what we did." Reekie said that the inclusion of the International riders to this year's Australian Championship is not only good for the class but for the Australian based riders too. "It's great to have Christian [Iddon] and Davide [Gozzini] come over from their respective countries to compete in this year's Australian Championship, as they're both International class riders on top notch equipment and that certainly raises the bar in terms of the competition level," the 22-year-old commented. "I say the more International riders the better because it gives our country a chance to prove that we're no pushovers when it comes to Supermoto." In a quite interesting fact, Reekie has now won the past three Australian Championships in the 'S2' class and has done it on the 2007 model KTM 505cc SMR. "I have ridden the same bike in my past three Australian Championship wins and it hasn't missed a beat since," added Reekie. "Full credit must go to the team at KTM for providing me with such a strong bike and enabling me to enjoy so much success on the one bike." Despite having just being laid up sick in bed for over a month Ross Taylor aboard his Clake (combined clutch and brake system) equipped Rising Sun Honda CRF finished a very creditable 3rd in the S2 class.
