Glenn Coldenhoff Races To First Ever MXGP Round Win With 1-2 Result In Latvia.
The Grand Prix of Latvia will live long in the memory for Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe‰Ûªs Glenn Coldenhoff who blitzed his rivals to take first and second positions in the motos and grasp his first victory in the premier class at Kegums, Lativia in the early hours of this morning.

The Suzuki pilot was near flawless in the tricky and ever changing conditions after overnight rain left the venue underwater early in the morning. By the time the MXGP riders hit the track for their opening moto the track had somewhat dried and continued track work during the day had the delightful looking circuit looking near 100% by the time the day ended.

Coldenhoff started the weekend well with a promising run to fifth place in Saturday‰Ûªs Qualification Heat. The Dutchman was feeling fast and confident on the sandy track and it showed from the first seconds of the first moto when he seized the holeshot and established a strong lead in the opening laps.

With Strijbos quickly slotting into second position the two RM-Z450s fronted the world for the entire 30-minute and two-lap distance. The Belgian actually began to catch and apply some light pressure to team-mate but Coldenhoff didn't make any mistakes and held firm for Suzuki‰Ûªs third chequered flag of the year.

It was all Suzuki up front in the opeing MXGP race in Latvia
Behind the Suzuki pair, Gauiter Paulin worked his way into third position, while Red Bull KTM's Antonio Cairoli despite riding with the pain of a broken elbow, mastered the tricky conditions to finish 5th.

Yamaha's Romain Febvre who came in to the round of the back of four straight round wins and the championship leaders Red Plate, crashed in the first turn and took for ever to get going again. A brilliant ride through the field saw the Frenchman finish the opening moto in 8th position.

Australia's Dean Ferris riding for the Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna team finished the opening race in 10th position after running as high as 6th, while Todd Waters racing for the Ice One Husqvarna Factory team had to settle for 15th after dropping a handful of spots late in the race.

The second moto was dominated by Febvre, with the championship leader quickly hitting the front and never looking back.

Behind him a Coldenhoff settled into second position, but came under attack, from HRC Evgeny Bobryshev early, before Cairoli moved into third position and took aim at passing the MXGP rookie.

Glenn Coldenhoff celebrates his MXGP round win
Coldenhoff once again held strong and defended off the challenge from Cairoli only to come under attack in the final stages of the race by a fast finishing Gautier Paulin aboard his HRC Honda. Coldenhoff never faulted however, finishing the moto just over two seconds behind Febvre who slowed on the final lap, to claim his first ever MXGP round win.

‰ÛÏThe weekend started good and I was fast right away." Coldenhoff commented. "I‰Ûªve always had a good feeling on this track and the ‰Û÷Nations went well last year and this GP also.

"Of course I was really happy with the first moto. I started the season with a bit of a struggle. The goal was top-10 in the beginning, and later-on move up to the top-five and this came a bit unexpectedly!

"Winning a GP is something different! I‰Ûªm really happy and the team has worked hard‰Û_it is just great.‰Û

‰ÛÏIt‰Ûªs always positive when we‰Ûªre on the podium as it‰Ûªs good for everybody in the team, just when we saw the riding we had yesterday we could expect a little better." Paulin commented. "Third and third, and second overall is strong, but yesterday I completely dominated the day.

"It was really wet today so this was a little more hard for the bikes because it was very sticky, and it also made it more hard to pass. Actually the whole weekend I didn‰Ûªt make good starts, but yesterday was a little easier to pass than today so I could come through more easily.

"For sure it‰Ûªs positive, and although we still aim to do better, I‰Ûªm happy.‰ÛÏ

Febvre turned what could have been a disastrous day after his first race, first turn crash into another positive step towards winning the MXGP championship in his first year in the class.

The French riders 8-1 result netted him 38 points for the round, helping him to extend his championship lead by a further two points over Cairoli.

"I was maybe second or third on the straight but going into the turn somebody hit me and some of us crashed together." Febvre explained of his first turn crash. "I lost some time restarting the bike and when I was looking at the pack going over one of the jumps I could see that they were really far!

"I knew it would be difficult to come back but I managed it to eighth. I was really happy with my riding but not with the result and I knew with a good start in the second moto I had the speed to lead and made it happen."

Rockstar Suzuki's Kevin Strijbos backed up his second place finish in the opening race with a sixth place finish in race two after a ride through the field to claim fourth for the round, while Cairoli had to be happy with his 5th place round result on the back of his 4-4 moto results.

Steven Frossard in his first race for the Monster Energy Kawasaki team finished sixth after working his way through the field in both races, while Yamaha's Jeremy Van Horebeek finished the day in 7th after a crash in the second race. "A perfect weekend, winning the Qualifying race and both GP motos. I was confident from the word go, but I still had to make it happen." Anstie said. "The start was really heavy in the first race after the rain last night, but I was soon fourth and just picked off the riders ahead of me one by one.

"As I waited for the start of the second race it went through my head that I had never gone 1-1 before, but I got the holeshot and was on my way. The whole team has worked hard for this win and it proves that we are headed in the right direction and looking for more wins before the season is over."

In the MX2 championship standings, the injured Jeffrey Herlings continues to lead the way by 46 points from Gajser despite missing the past weekends GP.
