Former pro motocross racer Paul Grant was back atop the podium last weekend with the former CDR Yamaha rider taking out the inaugural Mr. VMX Title last weekend at Broadford in Victoria.

Mr. VMX, which included the Aussie VMX Des Nations was the initiative of the Viper Vintage Moto X Club Inc. which is a not for profit vintage motocross based club that is gaining more members each year with their laid-back family orientated race days.

Held over 2 days, Feb 24-25, the meeting attracted almost 100 riders across 13 classes, with the feature class being the Mr. VMX Pre 97 all powers title. The Mr. VMX Pre 97 class attracted an impressive number of riders with only a few spots vacant on the 30 rider start gate.

Paul Grant is no stranger to the Motocross des Nations format having represented Australia back in 2003 with the late Paul Broomfield and Andrew McFarlane at Zolder in Belgium.

Grant's main challenge came from local A grader Aaron Stevens with Kade Dunscombe putting his front wheel in the picture from time to time. Stevens took the win in the opening moto on a very wet track on Saturday with the duo never really more than a couple of bike lengths apart.

Sunday was a total contrast to Saturday's humid warm conditions with a howling wind and cold temperatures making it a challenging day. Race 2 saw Grant grab the holeshot while Stevens had to work his way to the front following an average start. By the chequered flag Steven had gained ground and made a huge lunge for the win but fell about two feet short. Dunscombe finished third once again, as he did in moto 1.

The title and the $500 1st. place cash prize was then set for the final moto with Grant and Stevens tied on points and Kade Dunscombe still a mathematical chance.

Grant blasted his 1993 CR500 off the line to claim another impressive holeshot. Stevens was not far behind but Grant proved to be fitter and faster as the weekend came to a close and never look bothered as Stevens slowly dropped back.

In the end, Grant took the title with a 2-1-1 scorecard while Stevens finished second with 1-2-2 and Kade Dunscombe rounded out the first ever Mr. VMX podium with a 3-3-5 result.

Grant, who travelled down from NSW to take part in the event was impressed with the day. "It was a good fun meeting with lots of great local competition on the historic old school Broadford Motocross Track, the last time I raced here was back in 2000 when the World 500cc Motocross GP was run and the track has barely changed since then‰Û

The Viper Vintage Moto X Club also offers two Modern race Classes along with a Junior class to keep it family friendly. Paul Hoey, Secretary of the Vipers said, "While the main focus is on Vintage machinery we realise that to make it more attractive to families we need to offer riders the opportunity to involve any other family members that do not have vintage machinery. So we offer two Modern classes and a Junior Class.‰Û
