KTM's Regan Duffy has gotten his MX1 career off to the perfect start winning the opening round of the 2021 Pro MX Championship held at Wonthaggi today.
18-year-old Duffy started the day off on the right food, posting the fastest time in regular qualifying, edging out Honda's
Kirk Gibbs by just 1/10th of a second. In fact, the top 5 in qualifying were separated by just over 2/10th of a second, with all the heavy hitters showing speed early.
In the new look AMX Superpole, it was once again Duffy who topped the timesheets, ahead of CDR Yamaha's
Luke Clout and Honda's
Brett Metcalfe.
In the opening moto, it was Clout who lead early holding at bay veteran Honda Metcalfe while Duffy was working his way through the front half of the field.
At the 75% mark of the moto, Metcalfe made the move around Clout and opened up an unbeatable lead, going on to take the opening MX1 moto victory for the season.
Clout held on for second place, with a fast-finishing Duffy coming home in third.

Todd Waters powered his factory Husqvarna to a 4th place finish, with Gibbs rounding out the top five ahead of Mellross, who suffered a heavy full earlier in the day during Superpole.
Kawasaki's
Jayden Rykers, who qualified well down the field, found form to finish 7th ahead of class rookie
Max Purvis, Jai Walker, and Suzuki's
Connor Tierney in 10th.
It was a tough return to racing for Matt Moss, crashing heavily early in the opening moto and putting an end to his day.
It was Gibbs who lead the field out of the first turn in moto 2, with Mellross, Clout, and Duffy in tow.
Unfortunately for Clout, a mechanical issue put an early end to his day, scoring a DNF for the race.
Out front, a mistake from Gibbs allowed Mellross to lead momentarily before Duffy made his way to the front and never looked back, racing on to an impressive race win and in the process claimed the overall victory for the day.
Behind Duffy, Waters looked solid in second position, and after fending off a mid-race challenge from Metcalfe and holding off Gibbs at the end of the race, claimed second for the moto and the final spot on the podium for the day.
Gibbs rounded out the top three for the second moto ahead of Mellross in 4th and Metcalfe in 5th. Metcalfe was in position to make a move on Waters for second spot, which would have been enough to take the overall win for the day, but a mistake left him on the ground; however, his 1-5 result for the day was enough to leave him in second spot overall for the round.
A strong ride by Tierney gave him 6th for the second moto, while Purvis put in another great result finishing 7th, which was enough to give him 6th overall for the round behind 4th placed Gibbs and 5th placed Mellross.
Tierney finished the round out in 7th overall, just ahead of Rykers after a late-race tip over relegated him down the order.
Jai Walker finished the day out in 9th, while Clout, despite the second moto DNF rounded out the top ten.
