Final round of Taz Women’s Motocross Series hits Penguin this weekend

Posted:

The final round of the 2013 Taz Women's Motocross series is being held at the Penguin Mx Track at Blackwood Park this weekend on Sunday the 19th of May.

Round one at Oatlands (STMCA) saw 14 riders on the grid instead of 5-6 at their club days, all riders enjoyed a great day our with the top three riders on the day receiving the Inaugural trophies for the new series, while all fourteen competitors also received a medallion to recognise their commitment to the new Tasmanian series.

Round two was held at Bridport (LMSC) and saw rider numbers increase to 17 in a big boost to the series.

After two rounds of racing, Morgan Wright currently leads the way on 150 points after winning all six motos to date and is the favourite to take out the series at the conclusion of racing this Sunday

"I'm not nervous, I usually keep calm for racing," said Wright in regards to taking the points lead in to the final round." I think it's fantastic that we can get a group of around 20 female rides to take part in motocross, you don't see it often!

"I would recommend it to the younger girls, I wish there were more younger ones getting into the sport. I love racing with a big group of girls, I enjoy seeing them all lined up either side of me. Any one of these riders can push me off first place they enjoyed it again.

"I cant wait for the last round, but its going be tough, as Penguin is a clay based track and the weather needs to be nice so it can be another great day for all riders." Wright concluded.

Second placed rider in the series, Sarah Knee is not just pumped on the fact that she currently sits second in points, but also the fact that the series is up and running, after initially just looking for a one off race for Tasmanian women to race together in.

"It is just so cool that there are so many that are coming along to ride now and support this first ever series for Tasmania." Knee stated. "It started with Morgan (Morgan Wright) and I just wanting to hire a track for the motocross girls to have a get together, then we ended up with 22 senior girls/women wanting to ride too.

"So that's where our mums said , lets do a Tasmanian Series and have more fun and Trophies!, So that's how it begun," Knee explained.

The concept of the new series was futher enhanced by the support of Glenn Macdonald (MACA Coaching) and MACA female coach and former Women's national champion Kristy Gillespie who headed over to Tasmania for a school aimed at helping grow female partcipation earlier this year.

"Glenn Macdonald brought Kristy Gillespie over here in Feburary, which helped us girls so much as Kristy is someone to look up to and is an idol of quite a few of the girls in our Series," Knee commented.

The school was a fresh concept for the Motocross Advanced Coaching Academy (MACA Coaching) to encourage female participants, with the school being hailed a success. The course, which was led by Macdonald himself along with Gillespie attracted a fully booked course at the Oatlands circuit in Tasmania back on the 2nd February.

‰ÛÏWe have run very successful women‰Ûªs coaching programs in the past‰Ûª said Macdonald ‰Û÷and we were keen to provide a service again to female clientele.‰Û
