The FIM has confirmed that functional airbag systems will become compulsory for riders competing in the FIM MXGP, MX2 and Women’s Motocross World Championships, as well as the FIM Motocross of Nations, from the 2028 season.
The decision was made by the Motocross Permanent Bureau, comprising FIM President Jorge Viegas and Infront Moto Racing President and CEO David Luongo, as part of an update to the regulations covering rider equipment and protective clothing.
Under the new regulations, the use of a functional and operational airbag system will be highly recommended from 2027, before becoming compulsory from 2028.
When the requirement comes into force, riders will need to use an airbag system that meets one of two approved standards. This will either be a FIM Homologated Airbag Off-road system (FRHPab-01), which is due to be published by the end of 2026, or an airbag system declared compliant with FIM Category 3 (Motocross) from the approved list.
The regulation will apply to on-track activity, with the equipment required to be worn and correctly fastened at all times during practice and racing.
The airbag must also be functional and operational at the start of every track session.
The FIM has also made it clear that the Technical Director will have the final say on matters relating to rider equipment and compliance with the regulations.
The move represents a significant change to protective equipment requirements across the premier levels of FIM motocross competition, with teams and riders now having the 2027 season to become accustomed to the technology before its mandatory introduction the following year.
