Elite rider training camp paves the way for future Victorian success

Posted:

Motorcycling Victoria will be running its first-ever Elite Rider Training Camp this week, November 24-26, at Melbourne's Sports & Aquatic Centre (MSAC).

A group of ten of Victoria's most exciting riders from across all disciplines of the sport will participate in the three-day camp aimed to improve their off-bike skills and knowledge. They will also get the chance to learn from some of the sport's top professionals to help them develop into even more accomplished riders in the future.

"We already know Victoria competes at an elite-level in motorcycle sport. This training camp is geared towards making our best riders even better," MV's Chief Executive Officer Andrew Weiss said.

The camp, which is fully-funded and administered by MV, will focus on aspects such as recovery, injury prevention, training techniques, personal development, media training, psychology, motivation, nutrition and much more.

"This camp is just the beginning. MV hopes to run a Junior Development Camp halfway through 2012 and another Elite Rider Training Camp towards the end of next year," Mr Weiss added.

Top fitness trainer Nick Conway, who has an extensive background in triathlons and fitness training, will be putting our riders through their paces. Lee Hogan, a former 11-time national motocross and supercross champion, now one of the sport's leading coaches, will be overseeing the camp.

Of those who will be put to the test at MSAC will be one of Victoria's top enduro riders, Mitcham Harper.

Harper, from Bright in the state's north-east, won last year's inaugural Wildwood Rock Extreme Enduro Challenge, featured strongly in this year's Victorian Off-Road Championships, and recently represented Australia at the 2011 International Six Day Enduro in Finland in August, winning a gold medal in the process.

"It will be good to learn the fitness-side of the sport. It's not all about having the skills on the bike; you've got to be fit in enduro," Harper added.

"I think it's great that MV is holding a camp like this.

"It will help out our young riders as well, and with riders that could not be able to afford to do it. It will be a really good opportunity," Harper concluded.
