Eli Tomac will miss upcoming rounds of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship after further evaluation confirmed he suffered a broken fibula during qualifying at Round 5 in Tampa, Florida.
Initially believed to be a sprained ankle and bruised calf, Tomac pushed through the pain to finish seventh in his heat race and compete in the main event, where he scored five points to stay in contention for the 450SX title. However, after experiencing continued discomfort, additional scans revealed the extent of the injury.
“Unfortunately, this was more than an ankle sprain and a bruised calf,” Tomac said in a team statement. “After two days of pain not improving, I got additional scans on my leg, and I do have a broken fibula. This is such a bummer as I’ve never felt better on the motorcycle in Supercross, and getting a win at San Diego was great. I don’t have an exact timeframe of recovery at this time but will be working to come back as soon as possible.”
The eight-time AMA Supercross and Motocross champion will now focus on recovery, with an update on his return expected at a later date.
