Darryll King declared 2004 NZ Supercross Champion

Posted:

Motorcycling New Zealand has declared the results of the New Zealand National Supercross series after three rounds.

Darryll King has been declared the champion in both the 125 and 250 classes, winning both by a margin of six points.

Josh Coppins dominated the first round in Motueka, before he went back to Europe to prepare for the World Motocross Championships, the last round scheduled for Wanganui succumbed to bad weather and had to be cancelled. In between, rounds at Tokoroa and

Wellington produced some of the closest racing for many years. The effect of the cancelled round was that the 12 race programme became a nine race programme

Darryll King (Subway Yamaha) admits that he never set out to win either title after retiring from supercross last year."

"Thirty-five is a bit old for this," quipped King after confirming he had collected his 22nd senior national title in motocross/ supercross.

"I entered this year for my team after having done no supercross training," said the former world motocross number two. King won the first of his 22 senior titles in 1986. He gained the edge this year at the Wellington round on a very technical course that ended up being the finale. King admits that other riders are faster- "Jonathon (Burkhart) was going faster than me and Mason (Phillips) is a very good supercross specialist."

Mason Phillips (Subway Yamaha) was six points behind King in the 250cc with Scott Columb (Queenstown) occupying third. Columb winged to Europe last week to pursue a team ride. Runner up in the 125s, Masterton's Jonathon Burkhart, won more races than King but didn't have the consistency or experience.

Scott Columb had to be content with another third on the podium.

The outstanding result in the juniors came in the form of Pukekohe's Matthew Prumm. In his first year at high school, Prumm shut out the field in the 11-12 year class winning all nine races.

Final Standings

125cc
1 Darryll King (Subway Yamaha) - 191 Points
2 Jonathan Burkhart (Masterton Honda) -185
3 Scott Columb (Team Suzuki) - 151

250cc
1 Darryll King (Subway Yamaha) - 197 Points
2 Mason Philips (Subway Yamaha) - 191
3 Scott Columb (Team Suzuki) - 176
