Coma Marches Forward With Stage 5 win, Another Top Ten Result For Price

Posted:

Battling with Joan Barreda from the outset of stage five in Buenos Aires, Marc Coma finally tasted victory on the Dakar 2015, regaining 2 minutes and 16 seconds on his countryman Barreda.

Whilst he does not possess the experience of Marc Coma, Joan Barreda is without doubt just as smart. After having opened a further gap of two minutes on the KTM rider on Wednesday between Chilecito and Copiapo, the official Honda HRC rider had to open the way today, pursued by Coma.

This situation only lasted for thirty kilometres, since Barreda preferred to let his Coma lead the way and set the pace resulting in Coma securing the stage win.

‰ÛÏIt was a very tough stage." Coma admitted. "There was fesh-fesh all the time and in the fesh-fesh you cannot see the stones and it is not comfortable to ride. You are always having to pay attention.

"After 30 km I was at the front and opening the stage again. I tried to lead at a good pace and not take to many risks, because today was very tricky. At the end, I'm happy how the day was.

"It's going to be very difficult to take time from Joan, but, you know, we have a lot of racing in front of us. There's the second part of the rally and we'll have two marathon stages.

"We will try like hell until the last day. We know that Joan is very fast and that he has a very high level, but we will try, for sure‰Û

This strategy by Barreda paid off however, although he gave up slightly more than two minutes to his rival in the general standings, Barreda retains a considerable lead on arrival in Antofagasta. However, it is not a gap that is likely to worry a Marc Coma savouring his first success of 2015 and intending to use the marathon stage to make the difference.

"It was good, I feel happy after all the day, a really tough day." Barreda commented. "It's good, we had another great result.I finished with Marc. Overall, I'm happy.

"I'll try to keep focused with the navigation and with the riding also. I suppose that now, with more experience, I know that when Marc is pushing he's pushing all day. He goes really fast so it's impossible to get in front, so it's easier just to try and keep up with Marc‰Û

Australian Toby Price finished the day with another top ten stage performance, crossing the line in 10th position 10 minutes and 5 seconds behind coma. IN the overall classification, Price holds down 8th spot, just over one minute behind fellow first time Dakar racer Matthias Walkner in 7th.

"Today was another really tough stage, we started stage 5 in 19th position and made our way through to 10th which is positive." Price said. "There was a lot of dust today which made it extremely tricky to see stones and the correct tracks, you had to really pay attention all day.

"I‰Ûªm starting to find my bearings a little better with the road book which is great, it‰Ûªs all about learning for me. There‰Ûªs still the second part of the rally ahead of us which includes to marathon stages. Bring on day 6!

Aussie's Llewellyn Sullivan-Pavey and Simon Pavey also kept up their solid performances on day five with Llewellyn finishing the day in 60th position, while his father Simon was just 11 minutes behind in 69th.

At this point in time Clayton Jacobsen has yet to register at the final check point as the final riders complete stage five.
