Aussie Kirk Gibbs fell a few points short of defending his MX1 title as Cody Cooper was crowned 2019 Champion.
The Trans-Tasman battle for the MX1 class trophy swung in the favour of Kiwi rider Cody Cooper yesterday, as he narrowly won the final Fox- sponsored 2019 New Zealand Motocross Championships‰Ûª round to take the red plate back from Australian Altherm JCR Yamaha rider Kirk Gibbs.
It came down to the very last race of 12 in the four-round season ‰ÛÒ where the two top riders have been trading victories back and forth - at Taupo's Digger McEwen Motocross Park.
Trailing by three points Gibbs needed to win the third moto to defend his 2018 title and he went out hard.
‰ÛÏThe last race I got out front early but struggled with the track a bit. Cody rode really well and passed me. I made a big mistake and came off the track. I lost a lot of ground and he got away and ended up winning,‰Û
Kayne Lamont finished 3-8-3, with a crash in the red-flagged second race, giving him fourth overall for the weekend.
