Charli Cannon was the clear standout at the opening round of the WMX class of the 2022 ProMX Championship at Wonthaggi on the weekend.
A clearly nervous Cannon quickly shook off any jitters and went about asserting herself as the fastest female in the country in the two, fifteen-minute races contested in warm and sunny conditions, topping the podium ahead of Emma Milesevic and Madison Brown.
Right from the drop of the gate in race one, Cannon was in a league of her own. She quickly raced to the lead and began to stretch her lead over her rivals in both motos and go on to take the perfect 1-1 start to her championship campaign. Race one saw her winning margin at 32 seconds and in race two the gap was 28 seconds, but she remains humble and determined to keep improving as the season progresses.
“I’m so glad to just get that race out of the way as I was so nervous all day yesterday and today,” she said. “I have raced a lot of the girls but never all at once and never in an event as big as this, so it was a bit overwhelming this morning and I’m glad I got through the day,” the 16-year-old said.
“The track was hard and really physical, but my bike worked great the team were awesome. Everyone helps, even Rhys (Budd) and Alex (Larwood) were helping me with where to go and what to do.
“It’s a few more rounds before we get to the next Women’s round so, I might do some of the MX3 races to stay sharp. Thanks to the Yamalube Yamaha Team, their support has been amazing and all our team sponsors,” she concluded.

Emma Milesevic took a solid second but felt she was not at her best.
“It was ok, not great. I rode tight and made a lot of mistakes,” Milesevic explained. “I got hit by a rider in race 2 and it damaged my rear brake. Overall, we scored good points. Preparing for round 2 will require me to knuckle down and do more riding and I need to change some of my habits. I aim to come back stronger for round 2,” she concluded.
Madison Brown rounded out the podium ahead of Taylah McCutcheon who was fourth.
