Three-time Australian Safari winner Andy Caldecott’s 2004 Dakar dream is over.

Caldecott, who finished the 7th stage in 9th place, suffered a broken left ankle when his foot was knocked off the peg of his KTM 660 by an unknown object. The incident occurred 134 kilometres from the finish line of the 701-kilometer 7th stage from Tan-Tan in Morocco to Atar in Mauritania.

Speaking to the Adelaide Advertiser, Caldecott’s wife, Tracy, confirmed the bad news.

“He’s really, really disappointed because he didn’t crash, and he was still feeling really comfortable,” she said. “Something just caught his foot and knocked it off the pedal for a moment, and he didn’t even crash.”

Andy is currently in the hospital awaiting plaster, with no chance of continuing in the rally.
