Broc Grabham Wins Yellow Mountain Cross Country

Posted:

The YELLOW MOUNTAIN CROSS COUNTRY TWO day event has been run and won with Broc Grabham coming out on top after 440km against some of the biggest names in Australian Desert Racing!

Privateer racer Broc, the youngest of the Grabham family riding a KTM450 EXC raced the event for the first time and came out on top by 50 seconds over Condobolin local Jacob Smith with his brother Todd a further 11 minutes both racing for GHR Honda.

Racing 220km each day between the townships of Condobolin and Tottenham in western NSW, it is run as an Interclub between the two MNSW Motorcycle clubs of Tottenham and Condobolin.

The track is marked by arrows and the terrain consists of open red soil plains to snotty Mallee trails to rocky hills. Each year the event direction alternates, with the 2014 race beginning and ending in Tottenham wth Grabham taking the win.

"It was a tough race, but when I finished the prologue in 3rd behind the GHR Honda guys, I knew I could stay with them," said an ecstatic Grabham.

Some bad luck to both Todd and Jacob early on day one with tyre and fuel issues saw Broc pushed to the lead by the time the second fuel stop was reached, taking him out of the dust, but forced to ride ahead, looking for the track as well as being cautious of Pigs, Cows, Sheep & Kangaroo‰Ûªs, the latter of which causing the Bathurst local to go down.

"I lost nearly a minute of my lead when I clipped a roo with my left handlebar sending me off into the trees, when I got going again I could see Jacob Smith coming on fast, a few more mistakes had Jacob and I racing Bar to Bar, but I was able to pull away and finish the day 39 seconds ahead of him". Grabham explained.

Sunday‰Ûªs racing began with Broc and Jacob starting together.

"Sitting at the start next to Jacob, I knew he would be hard to beat as he has raced and won this event a lot of times, off the start I got the jump on him and I knew I had to try and pull away early in the tighter bush." Grabham continued.

And pull away he did, with about a minute lead on the GHR Honda racer, and only 50km in, the youngster ran into problems though with fence wire getting caught in the rear wheel and whipping him in the back. After stopping and unsuccessfully attempting to remove the wire Broc remounted and pushed on

"I was very lucky, it could have ended my race but I just wanted to win not come second or third.." Grabham admitted.

Luckily for him, the wire snapped and he went on to win the event ahead of the GHR Honda mounted Smith brothers.

"I was really happy when I crossed the finish line in first because I proved I was fast enough to win and beat the guys that get more support, it wasn't just because they had little issues the first day.

"I really want to thank my family for supporting me and helping along with Ipone, Axo, Shark, EKS Brand and DRD. I love racing and I couldn‰Ûªt do it without their help, hopefully I can keep proving that I‰Ûªm faster than the rest of my family!! haha".
