Blake Gillard reports on his 4th Round of the ADAC Youngster Cup

Posted:

Blake Gillard is a young Kiwi making his way in the motocross world, in particular Germany at the moment. Gillard spent some time on the Australian National Circuit last year (2006) but was hindered by injury. For 2007 he took a different tact and headed to Europe. Every now and then he sends out an email to let everyone know how he is doing. Here is his latest instalment in his words. "We were semi sorted, you could say, two days before we left for the 4th Round of the ADAC Youngster Cup - at Innkreis in Austria. "We had the race bike back together and the practice engine block on the side ready to take south with us. Tuesday we decided to run the race bike up and make sure there are no problems but there was, she would not kick over. Could bump start it and it ran fine but wouldn't kick over. Stripped it down but no one could find the answer, so we swapped engines. Practice engine kicked over after a little bit but still not so easy. Both bikes had been completely rebuilt so we were quite stumped as to what it was. "We set out for Austria some 800+ kms. I was excited and looking forward to this meeting as I was riding for a new race team, still KTM but a little smaller and I could get a lot more help from them and also run my sponsors on my gear and run whatever gear colours I wanted. The team is called Greiner KTM and the boss Falk Greiner is real cool, speaks no English but just wants to help me out so much. I'm treated like I'm a top rider !! They are based at Genthin which is only 160 klms from where I am living in Schwerin. "Saturday rolled over and time for practice, the bike was tough to start cold but once it was running and hot it was ok. After I came in from practice I got the mechanics to check the pilot jet as the bike was real hesitant off the bottom. They changed a few things but it was no better for qualifying, I ended up 19th overall. "Sunday and still no answers to what the problem was. It was just right off the bottom so landing off jumps and slow corners it felt like I was hitting neutral when I got on the gas. "First race was average, not the best of starts and worked my was to 7th. "Second race I got a awful start, hesitated off the line and was maybe 35th at best into the corner. Started making my way up only to stall on the 3rd lap, got up and going again and worked up to 17th. "My 'family jewels' and stomach were so sore from hitting the petrol cap every time it bogged on a jump down ramp. I was nearly ready to pull off with about 4 laps to go as it was tough to breath. "After the race I dropped to the ground and struggled to get air in. I was taken to hospital for some scans and it just showed bruising on my lower abdomen. "That was an 11th overall and drops me back from 4th overall to 5th equal. 19 points adrift of 4th but it's only 2 points to third and another 2 to 2nd. Then 14 points to 1st. "I'll just have to take it easy for a little while. Now I'm hoping to get back on the bike for some testing this weekend as we have Round 4 of the International Masters next weekend. Hopefully I can pull it all back together as this is the one big sand race this year and there are some awesome sand riders this side of the world."
