BGC Contracting King of the Cross turning into a promoter’s dream

The entry list for the 2011 "BGC Contracting King of the Cross" this coming weekend is a Promoter's dream, reading like a who's who of Australian MX, with defending champion Jay Marmont locked in for the event for the second consecutive year.

Marmont will be joined by Paul Grant, Craig Anderson, Kade Mosig, Cody Mackie, Louis Calvin, Michael Addison, Paul Humberston, Jarrad Hockley, Kim Ashkenazi, and top local MX rider Daniel Woodward who is making a name for himself locally in the State MX Championships.

As well as all the above the promoters have secured top International rider Jamie Law from the UK, Law is right at the pointy end of the British MX Championships.

All of the top riders were racing at Coolum Pines in the final round of the "Rockstar Energy Drink" MX National Championships last weekend. I caught up with Jamie Law at the weekend and he told me,

"I'm really looking forward to the coming weekend, the track should suit me and from what I've been told it seems all of the riders really like the track at Southern Cross.

"Hopefully we can get some good weather and really put on a good show for the spectators. We have a long drive back to WA from Coolum, but Jeanette and I will also get a chance to see a good bit of Australia on the way back to WA so that will be good. The final round of the Australian MX Championships was quite good for me, I qualified in ninth position, a fair bit behind pole sitter Dean Ferris and Jay Marmont who was second, Lawson Bopping in third and Josh Coppins fourth. Over the four motos I was sixth overall, but I had a bit of crash in the final moto, but I should be fine for next weekend."

In the final round of the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals at Coolum, Jay Marmont made up the eighteen point deficit to Josh Coppins, securing his fourth consecutive National Title. Coppins crashed at the start of the third moto and took no further part in the meeting.

"The 2010 BGC Contracting King of the Cross" was Jay Marmont, who took the crown with a win and a second place in the 2 X 6 lap races for the title. He had considerable pressure applied by Michael Addison, Craig Anderson and Dean Porter. However there can only ever be "One King" so the minor placings are called "The Pro Prince of the Cross" with Michael Addison winning from Craig Anderson second and Dean Porter third.

This was Marmont's second win at the Southern Cross track having won the event in 2003 so he was pleased to have made the trip from the East and is looking forward to coming back again this year." With the exception of Dean Porter all of last year's main combatants are returning to take up where they left off in 2010.

The two day meeting is run in a similar format to the Manjimup 15000, on the 1.6km track which is described as 'hard packed red dirt' which came into being in 1988. The Junior Riders contesting "The KTM Kid of the Cross" on the Saturday and the Seniors battling for the big money in "The BGC Contracting King of the Cross" on Sunday.

The event is held in Southern Cross 360 km east of Perth on the first full weekend in August. There will be a minimum of 450 -500 riders competing over the two days, with the seniors chasing a share of the massive $45,000 in prize money over the weekend. The "King of the Cross" for 2011 will take home $10,000 for his efforts. This year the meeting will also be catering for Pro Lites, Pro Open, Clubmen, Vets, Women's MX and Quads. The Vets race will be a memorial race for the late Paul Bloomfield and is attracting a good entry list.

The "Holeshot Award" was an outstanding success in 2010 and will return again in 2011. It will feature in every race with $50 up for grabs for the first rider into the first corner in each race courtesy of Prestige Honda Motorcycles.

There's a riding school the week prior to the event with Craig Anderson and Paul Grant taking the coaching classes and passing on some of the skills that have made them household names in Australian MX. This is open to anyone who wants to participate, but please contact the club prior to the event for further details and information. You can camp at the grounds, and there will be fireworks Saturday night, bar and canteen will be open all weekend but no BYO alcohol.

For any further information contact the club on www.sxmcc.com.au
