Aussie Speedway Team Tested In OstrÌ_w Wielkopolski

Team Australia headed east for the for the first time since 2001 this week for an official test match against current World Speedway Team Champions, Poland.

The tournament was staged at the Municipal Stadium, OstrÌ_w Wielkopolski on Thursday (1st May) when Australia fielded a 6-man team, consisting of Chris Holder, Troy Batchelor, Jason Doyle, Cameron Woodward, Davey Watt and welcoming back to the Australian side at late notice, Rory Schlein, who replaced the sidelined Darcy Ward in front of a home crowd of 8,000 Polish fans.

The Poles were tough opposition on home turf, beating Australia 54-39. The Polish defence was led by former World Champion, Tomasz Gollob and current World No.2, Jarek Hampel.

‰ÛÏIt was always going to a a tough fought battle in the Pole‰Ûªs back yard but the Aussies showed plenty of spirit and determination for what was a showcase tournament between the two sides." Australian Speedway Team Manager, Mark Lemon saidafter the contest.

"It was a great test for the guys and with the Speedway World Cup Final being staged in Poland in just a couple of months time, was a great opportunity for individuals to come together and work as a team.

"On behalf of the team, we thank PZM (Polish Federation) for the invitation to compete.‰Û
