Nineteen year old Laia, who hails from Barcelona, Spain, finished an incredible fourth in this year‰Ûªs Junior World Championship against the world‰Ûªs best young male riders. She has won the Ladies‰Ûª Championship every year since 2000, and is considered to be in a class of her own. With the earlier announcement of the participation of Beta‰Ûªs James Dabill, the 2005 Junior World Champion, the event now boasts two current World Champions Laia rides for the Repsol Montesa/Honda factory team and is the world‰Ûªs only full time professional woman motorcycle trials rider. She regularly competes in open world class competitions against male riders as their equal. "Huge rock steps and drop offs do not worry her and her balance, throttle control and ability to position the bike are second to none," said Australian Montesa importer, and Montesa team manager for the event, Tarp Hassinen. "I am delighted that Laia has agreed to compete in this event. Not only is she a very talented moto trials rider, but she is a delightful ambassador for Montesa and will be an inspiration for our many young lady riders." "Trials is one of the few motorcycle sports where mum, dad, brothers and sisters can all compete together at the one time." he added. Laia will ride the Australasian line at the Super Trial and will therefore take on Australia‰Ûªs and New Zealand‰Ûªs best riders, including current Australian Champion Colin Zarczynski (NSW) and New Zealand Champion Warren Laugesen. The obstacles they will ride will be of expert standard and as tough as any Australian Championship event. Event spokesman Pete Sens was very pleased with the event‰Ûªs latest coup. "The addition of Laia to the entry list will add a fascinating dimension to the event. Laia will compete against the boys and probably beat them all. It should be interesting to see how their egos respond to this," he stated. Laia will be riding the revolutionary new 4-stroke Montesa/Honda 4RT. The bike features fully electronic fuel injection and ignition, and recently took Takahisa Fujinami to second place and Dougie Lampkin to third place in its first World Championship season. Laia‰Ûªs Australian team mates for the event are Victorian Tom Scott and 18 year old Boyd Wilcocks from NSW. Scott recently won the Victorian Trials Championship on the 4RT. Although having ridden the bike for only a short time after returning from Europe, Scott was extremely impressed. "It has 2-stroke like power response, an incredibly consistent tune irrespective of revs or conditions, and is so easy to ride. It really is an awesome bike," exclaimed Scott. More news on Montesa‰Ûªs second rider for the Australian event, as well as the other teams that will be competing is still in the process of being confirmed. Further information on Laia Sanz can be found on her personal web site at www.laiasanz.com which includes a great photo gallery, complete with shots of Laia with Mick Doohan, Stefan Merriman, Valentino Rossi and Chris Vermuelen.
