Championsh created on Historic day at Broadford

Race records were broken during an incredible weekend at the 2012 Victorian Historic Road Race Championships at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex at Broadford on April 21-22.
Up to three records were broken on Saturday, April 21, on a dry track enveloped in autumn sunshine, which reached surface temperatures of up to 32.6 degrees Celsius. Peter Forkes recorded not one – but two – lap records on his 1980 Honda RSW 125 in the 125cc Forgotten Era class.
The Victorian clocked a time of 1:12.869 in Leg 1, beating his year-old record by 0.115 of a second. His new record didn't last long however, as he broke it again on Lap 3 of the second leg, shaving off a further .701 of a second.
Allan Wettenhall took out the 125cc Forgotten Era class on 89 points, not far behind was Bill Newton on 78 points, as Forkes finished up in third on 72 points.
Fast lap times weren't limited to two-wheels though as Garth Francis and Paul Kenny recorded a 1:16.322 on a 1960 TriBSA 750 in the first leg of the Unlimited Classic Sidecars. The Victorians ended up taking out the class on 89 points, in front of Brian and Leanne March on 76 points, and Bruce Marston and Graham Marston on 65 points.
Colin Heather, the 2011 Victorian 600cc Forgotten Era champion, rode phenomenally-well on Sunday, April 22, winning two out of two legs but had a day to forget on Saturday, when in Leg 2 mistook the last lap board as the chequered flag and entered the pits early. "I came in a lap early. Riding as a passenger in a sidecar and travelling long hours to get here - but anyway, I still went alright," Heather reflected.
The Dave's Carpentry & Constructions rider rode more than alright as he broke the race record in the same leg on Lap 3 when he achieved a very respectable 1:06.685 on his 1979 Honda CB/XL 500. "The bike was running well, the track was good too.
"After the new tyres we put on Saturday afternoon the bike handled really well and had perfect grip and it showed in the results," added the 24-year-old.
Mick Damon achieved 85 points throughout the weekend to win the 600cc Forgotten Era class ahead of Nick van de Zand with Colin in third.
The event also hosted the 2012 Victorian F2 Sidecar Championship. Victorians Ron Marten and Gavin Smith won back-to-back to state titles in the F2 Sidecar class.
"We've had a sensational weekend." said Marten
"The bike's been sensational, and I'll have to give a quick plug to the Victorian Motorcycle Wreckers, because that's an engine straight off their floor. It ran absolutely faultlessly," he added.
Mick Alton and Mark Patterson finished in second on 88 points, whilst Chrissie Clancy and Leanne March finished in third.
"It's always really good to have the crème of the crop come here from New South Wales. To race against the fastest riders in the country helps improves everybody." continued Marten
I actually like the back-half of the circuit, from Heartbreak Corner to the back of the left-hander, because I'm only running a standard engine and I don't have an excessive amount of horsepower so we have to make it up under handling and brakes,
"It's been a lot of fun." he concluded
