A sea of Orange invaded Victorias Broadford State motocross circuit last weekend, 9th and 10th of October, for the annual KTM Cup.

Up to 400 motocross riders competed in twelve classes with winners receiving the chance test their skills internationally with competitive rides at the World Mini Bike Championships in America, plus a major national event in New Zealand, which will be announced when the 2005 Kiwi motocross calendar is confirmed.

The format was a bit different for 2004. Last year saw a qualifying round held in each state and the decider held in Queensland. With this years event held a week after the completion of the Honda Junior Australian Motocross Championships, riders where already pumped after a big week of racing in Tasmania. Most of the out of state riders where returning home from the Aussies, including a line up of New Zealand as well as Thai riders.

Remarkably two of last year's winners with trips to America already under their belt, Jacob Blomfield of Motorex KTM and Tye Simmonds of Coastal KTM, once again set an unbeatable pace to each win their own respective classes and score a return seat to the USA.

Riding in the 85cc small wheel class, for the 9 to 14 years age group, Jacob Blomfield took outright wins in his three motos, to score maximum points and the overall win in this division for the day. Last year, Jacob took the outright win in the 65cc class which rewarded him with an entry into the World Mini Bike Championships in the USA, where he finished 11th, a position he hopes to improve on when he returns in 2005.

Stepping up into the 85cc big wheel class for the 12 to 14 years age group, was Tye Simmonds, who repeated his winning performance at the KTM Cup, as last year he took out the 85cc small wheel class. This youngster is also well on his way to winning the Supercross Masters Junior Championship as he leads the field in points, heading into the grand final in Gosford on 30 October. Tye also competed in the 23rd Annual Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships, Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, where he was on the podium placing 3rd in the 85cc modified class, and 6th in the 85cc stock 7-11 class.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Tye Saturday night, and was one of the lucky ones to see some video footage of his time in the states staying with U.S prodigy Zac Osborne. What an opportunity of a life time. It has inspired me to save up and fly to Loretta Lyn's in the next few years. What I saw was amazing... the riding style of the kids over there at the moment. Our top guns, are smooth, and have a central type riding style on the bike. On what I could see, Zac had a smooth style also, but was more forward than central, weighting the front of the bike, and that bike of his was revving, never heard a little 85cc sound like that. If the riders we send over to the states, bring back a piece of the riding styles, in a few years Motocross in Australia will go ahead in leaps and bounds.

In the senior classes Peter Boyle fresh from his domination of the B Grade Senior Victorian Titles in both classes has now made the switch from Suzuki to KTM where he continued his winning ways, taking both Intermediate lites and Intermediate Open support classes.

I have been watching the kid ride all season, watch out for him. He caught my attention at the 1st round of the Victorian ThumperX this year, when he lead the Pro Lites for a few laps after an awesome start.

Adam Monea isn't looking back after being picked up by KTM a few months ago, he placed 2nd in the Aussies on the 85cc and equal 3rd on the 125cc. Now he has taken out both classes in the KTM cup, which has scored him a ride in New Zealand. In December Adam will turn senior in Australia, but when he competes in New Zealand next year, he will be classed as a junior.

"I have competed in New Zealand before in the nationals on the 80, finishing top ten. I am looking forward to competing on my KTM next year, hoping to podium." he said.
