2010 kicked off with a bang as the Wellard Yamaha Junior Development Team put all on notice that they are still the number one West Australian junior MX team.
After sweeping all before them in 2009 YJDT showed that the off season had done little to slow them down, as each of the team made the podium at the twilight Coastal Park Summer X meeting on the weekend.
Having already debued the number one plate in winning style at the Dongara Arena Cross in January 15 year old YZ250F mounted Daniel Strickland (Five Star Yamaha) wanted to prove winning last years Championship was no fluke.
Daniel had his YZ on song all night and consistently carved up the sandy Coastal Park circuit producing the fastest lap times of the night and putting together enough points to stand on the top step of the podium.
“I was very frustrated as I could not buy a start in each race, meaning I had to fight my way to the front. But I still managed to do the job for the team so that’s all that counts” Daniel said after the meeting," Strickland said.
With the later part of 2009 plagued by injury and one he would rather forget Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) has made the transition to the 250F class for this season and is getting back into the swing of it after nearly six months of injuries.
Webster has a wealth of talent on a motorcycle and has adapted from the two stroke perfectly.
Riding in the younger age division he put on a display of precision riding that would make you doubt he had been off the bike for so long. With a 2, 3, 2 result Kyle managed to capture second place outright after three moto’s.
“My bike handles awesome!! Darren Thompson from Yamaha, who looks after the Under 19’s team came over to help race prep our bikes and he got mine spot on. I can’t believe how comfortable I feel on it” an excited Webster had to say about his result.
Last year Kyle and his team mate Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) were that close all year in the 85cc class you could have thrown a blanket over them. This year Jayden has moved up to the 125cc division. His determination and aggressive style has already made its mark on the field as Jayden ripped up Coastal’s with workman like skill.
Great starts meant he was at the front of the pack from the get go and showing no respect to the rest of the more experienced field Jayden fought tooth and nail in each race. After the dust had settled the Wellard Yamaha rider took the top step on the podium.
"Tonight I was pretty happy with how I rode. My YZ 125 got me great starts which made it easier for sure” Commented Jayden.
The newest member to the YJDT is ten year old Justin Hart (Causeway Yamaha) who comes in with some impressive credentials for someone so young. Justin was the 2008 Australian National 65cc Champ and took out the 2009 65cc W.A. State Championship as well as third in the 85cc Small Wheel division. He has lost none of his speed since then and had three holeshot wins to claim another top spot on the podium in his first hit out with the team.
“I think being part of the Wellard Yamaha Development Team is going to be great and I have some good riders as team mates” a very happy Hart stated.
This year Wellard Yamaha have two satellite riders on their team. Liam Whisler (Cully’s Yamaha) could very well be the dark horse in the field. Riding a Small Wheel 85cc Liam is in the same class as Justin and both boys mixed it up all night. Three seconds behind his team mate saw Liam with second outright for another great result for the team.
“Five podiums at Summer X is the start we wanted for sure. It was a shakedown meeting to see how our preparation is going before the season kicks off in couple of weeks. We still have a few things to tidy up before we are completely sorted but if this is any indication 2010 is going to be big for our Junior Development Team” reiterated Team Manager Peter Strickland.
