Kirk Hutton nabs second QLD win

Nine-time Queensland Enduro Champion, Yamaha Motor Australia’s ‘King Kirk’ Hutton, again proved his pack-leading speed today when he made it two wins from two races in 2010 at the opening round of the QLD Enduro-Cross Series held near Kingaroy.
Hutton, 36, piloted his “awesome” YZ450F to victory by more than two minutes over the 250-strong field today, which included three-time Australian Off-Road Champion, AJ Roberts.
The Kobble Creek resident’s win followed an equally impressive first place finish at the first round of the Yamaha Sprint Cross-Country Series last weekend.
“I’m stoked, it’s a good start to the year,” Hutton said. “I made a pretty big mistake in the first lap today and fell off uncharacteristically, so I’m pretty sore and sorry.
“But I’m stoked with the rest of the day. I rode smart and won pretty convincingly - I was happy with how I rode.
“The new YZ450F was going awesome, it has that much power on tap everywhere, it’s awesome.
“It was a true enduro track today, rocky, bull dusty with lots of logs. It was pretty technical, and wasn’t wide open like last weekend. You had to be very careful or you’d go down.
“The track was enjoyable in the end, though, it cleared out and we got five laps in so it was good training for the Yamaha AORC coming up in a few week’s time.”
Honda's AJ Roberts finished second followed by Yamaha Pro Motorcycles Queensland Enduro Team young gun Tom McCormack.
“On the Pro Class podium is where I want to be. Third isn’t where I want to be, I’m just going to work on it and do the best I can,” the 16-year-old said.
“I know where I want to be, I make a lot of mistakes, if I could keep it on two wheels I know I could go better and that’s what I’m gonna work on.
“I am happy with how I went today. The track was challenging, I never really felt comfortable after I had a huge crash in the first lap.
“After the crash I just put my head down and went hard for the other four laps... the track was different, it’s been a while since I’ve raced a track with long grass, rocks and dust.
“The club did a good job with what they had, it’s good to have races like that sometimes," he concluded.
