Produced as a partnership between Career Connections - Kangan Batman TAFE, Honda Australia (HART) and Red Cross Australia, the training DVD highlights the importance of motorcycle safety both on and off the road.

Secondary school students Zaid, from Hume Central School, and Phillip, from Sunbury Secondary College, wrote, produced and edited the instructional DVD which is now being used as a training aid for HART. Red Cross are also exploring the concept of a first aid course targeted at the motorbike riding community in which the DVD will be used.

The launch, which was held at Kangan Batman TAFE’s Broadmeadows campus, featured the first official screening of the Removing a Helmet from an Injured Motorcycle Rider DVD.

Frank Hardy, team leader at Career Connections – Kangan Batman TAFE, said the collaborative effort between community, industry and education creates opportunities for success.

“Many individuals, businesses and schools have combined efforts to produce this project, and the result is a valuable educational tool," he said.

“The DVD features footage of both road and off-road riders to remind us that safety is important wherever people ride. Additional segments focus on providing instruction on the correct way to remove various helmet types, something many riders would not be aware of.”

Virginia Leafe, General Manager of First Aid, Health & Safety, Red Cross says “Removing helmets in an accident situation is one of the many first aid skills the public should know.”

“It’s important for everyone to have first aid knowledge to be effective in saving lives, improving the chances of survival and minimising the consequences of any type of accident or first aid emergency.”

National manager of Honda Australia Rider Training Mark Collins addressed the launch gathering, and highlighted the importance of these kinds of safety training tools for all motorcycle riders.

“I wish this sort of training resource had been around 20 years ago when I started riding,” he said.

“So many riders just don’t know about first aid issues specific to motorcyclists. We train more than 7,000 riders each year at HART, and this DVD is definitely a valuable resource for each and every one of them.

“The boys have done a great job with the development and production of this project.”

Zaid and Phillip are both studying Year 11 VCE at their respective schools, and are undertaking Certificate II in Information Technology Multimedia in VET (Vocational Education and Training).
