Yamaha’s factory Australasian Safari team is preparing for its final competitive shakedown ahead of the gruelling event, with Todd Smith set to tackle this weekend’s Yellow Mountain Cross Country.
Todd will campaign a Safari-spec WR450F, part of the team’s fleet built entirely in-house at Sam Laws Motorcycles in Orange.
The crew has worked around the clock to finish Smith’s enduro weapon for this weekend in readiness for the 440km event which will run from Saturday to Sunday.
Riders will leave Tottenham on Saturday morning, checking in at Condobolin overnight before setting off for the return journey on Sunday morning.
Despite covering a relatively short distance, the local terrain always produces some interesting challenges for riders, with open red soil plains stretching between mallee trails and rocky hills.
Absent from the team lineup this weekend is Todd’s brother Jacob, who is making a strong recovery from injury and concentrating on the 4400km event in Western Australia next month as a first priority.
Jacob’s recent training included a 70km push bike ride, a steady sign that the 2007 Safari runner-up is ready to attack this year’s event head-on.
Dealer Principal Sam Laws said that the team’s preparation for the weekend’s Yellow Mountain Cross Country had left no stone unturned.
“We’re really confident of achieving a good result this weekend with Todd aboard the WR450F, the bike is a clear class leader and the rider is incredibly focused,” said Laws.
“The bike will be setup with full Safari specifications and this will provide us with a good base to work with as we prepare Todd and Jacob’s bikes for the Safari, which kicks off in less than a month.”
“Jacob’s recovery has been really encouraging, he is approaching full fitness and looking forward to going one better at this year’s Safari.”
200 local and interstate entries have been confirmed for the event this weekend.
