Woodstock Honda Thor Racing's Craig Anderson is looking to conquer the WA sand in round five of the Australian Motocross Championship at Wanneroo (WA) on 1 June.
Newcastle-based Anderson has mostly hard-packed surfaces to practice on, but is unperturbed by the vastly different sand surface in Wanneroo.
Having previously enjoyed victories at the similarly sandy Coastal and Manjimup circuits, Anderson is eager to race in the West again.
As the motocross championship reaches its midpoint, the 12-time Australian Champion and current series leader is aiming to extend his points advantage on the challenging Western Australian circuit.
Crossing the Nullabor for the first time in two years, Anderson and his team-mate Daniel McCoy are geared up to deliver top class racing for WA motorsport fans at Wanneroo, this Sunday.
"I love riding in the sand – Wanneroo is a tough track and gets really rutted, but I enjoy it," Anderson said
"I've won a lot of races in the sand including Coastal and Manjimup, so I'm looking forward to racing in WA again.
"Jay Marmont is strong on any kind of surface, so he’ll be a threat as always, but I reckon there’ll be a couple of dark horses at Wanneroo; Cheyne Boyd will be one to watch out for and local guy Michael Addison should go well there, too."
Piloting the #65 Woodstock Honda Thor Racing Pro Open machine, Daniel McCoy is also a fan of the Wanneroo circuit, having enjoyed strong results when the series last visited the circuit in 2006.
"I don't get the chance to ride on sand a lot, but I really like it," McCoy said.
"The last time we raced at Wanneroo in '06, I finished second on the 450, so I know which way the track goes and how rough it gets - it's one of my favourite rounds, and I'm pretty confident we can get a good result for Woodstock Honda." Woodstock Honda Thor Racing Pro Lite rider Kade Mosig is also up for the challenge. Having raced on the Wanneroo circuit only once before, the Honda young gun is eager to return to the West for this weekend's mid-season championship showdown.
Mosig's sand craft served him well at Wanneroo in 2006 where he scored an impressive sixth overall in his first senior competition, and Victorian star is expected to be a front runner this time around.
"Sand racing is my forte - I ride on sand quite a lot, so I'm expecting a good outcome this weekend," Mosig said.
"I love the track at Wanneroo; it's awesome.
"The last time we raced in WA, it was my first ever Pro Lites race - I think I finished sixth but my lap times were really good.
"I've got a lot more experience under my belt heading there this time around, and I'm in a good position to use Wanneroo to slip into the series lead, this weekend."
