In the lead up to the fifth round of the Australian Motocross Championship at Wanneroo this Sunday June 1, Motorex KTM racer Michael Addison from Lesmurdie, WA, won the Coastal Cup at Rockingham over the weekend, proving why his competitors mark him as the favourite for Wanneroo.
A 200 seat purpose built grand stand set up for Wanneroo, will be filled by Addison’s friends, fans, family and racing team Motorex KTM as the National Championship returns to his home state after a two year absence. The last National Championship in WA took place in 2006.
Addison has yet to secure a podium at the 2008 Australian Motocross Championship, with east coast rounds proving tough to conquer for the Pro Open contender. Addison’s best moto result has been fourth at the previous round in Newcastle (NSW), and now as the Championship heads to his home state of WA, Addison has been picked as the favourite for track familiarity.
Addison commented, “The sandy tracks of WA, scare a lot of east coast riders off, but I have grown up racing them and know they bring out the best in my riding. There would be nothing more satisfying to get my first podium on the KTM 450 SX-F for this Championship in front of home state fans. After my win Rockingham on the weekend, I’m confident I will be up there.
“I competed in the Pro Open and the Coastal Cup at Rockingham, with a third in the Open class and first in the feature race, which was the Coastal Cup. I was looking like gaining a win in the Pro Open but mechanical challenges set me back giving Louis Calvin and Dean Porter an advantage.
“Dean Porter hasn’t been up with the Pro Open front runners for east coast racers in the Australian Championship, but I consider him to be one of my toughest competitors for Wanneroo, because like me he is a local. It will be interesting to see how we both go up against Craig Anderson, Jay Marmont, Cheyne Boyd and Daryl Hurley who have been dominating the Australian Championship this season.
“I’m doing a lot of testing on the KTM 450 SX-F, on tracks around my home and also out at Wanneroo, and I’m helping out my Motorex KTM team mates who are all from the east coast and not familiar with the sandy surfaces of WA.”
Team mates Addison refers to are Todd Waters and Ryan Marmont in the Pro Lites and Tye Simmonds in the Under 19s.
Todd Waters from Cairns (QLD) also performed well at the Rockingham Coastal Cup, with a win in the Pro Lites class against WA local Louis Calvin.
Waters comments, “Michael Addison has been awesome in helping us with technique on the sand and this helped me at the Coastal Cup to get a win in the Pro Lites and a third place podium in the Pro Open.
“The sand is a lot of fun but it is really difficult coming from a harder surface. Motorex KTM certainly has an advantage gaining tips on technique from Addison’s local knowledge and I expect Wanneroo to favour riders familiar with sand. I got third at the previous round of the Australian Championship in the Pro Lites, and I’m hoping to better that result this weekend taking Addison’s riding tips into consideration.”
Joining Waters in the Pro Lites class will be Wollongong (NSW) racer Ryan Marmont who did not compete at the Coastal Cup, but has raced and won in WA before, while Tye Simmonds from Bourke (NSW) will wrap up the teams entry in the Under 19s class. Simmonds didn’t have the best of race meetings at the Coastal Cup, but feels confident under Addison’s guidance he will improve for Wanneroo this weekend.
Round five of the Australian Motocross Championship will take place on Sunday June 1, at AJS Motocross Club, located on Wattle Avenue East, Wanneroo. Action starts at 8:30am with racing from 11am.
