Team Rampant Clothing’s MX ladies have the second round of the Yamaha Australian Women’s Motocross Championship set firmly in their crosshairs.
Gun racers, Amy Boyd (from Gwandalin, NSW) and Renae Evans (from Kingaroy, QLD), both showed speed and talent at the first round of the championship in March at Tivoli, QLD.
The moto-mad ladies said they would be looking for a top-3 and top-10 finish respectively when the hotly contested series visits Newry, Victoria, this weekend.
“I kept up with two-time World Women’s MX Champion Katherine Prumm and came third in the first moto at the first round at Tivoli, Queensland,” Boyd, 17, said.
“In the second moto I was keeping up with Prumm again, but lost my front wheel and crashed. I knocked myself out so had to DNF.”
Boyd had an impressive start to the 2008 season with several wins, including the Yamaha Stadium Motocross Championships rounds one and two (round three clashed with the first Women’s MX Championship).
She said she was confident coming in to this weekend, after training hard and racing lots of open and club events during the last few months.
“The competition is really stiff, about 30 girls are racing and everyone has been training and want to be in the top-3,” Boyd said.
“But I’m feeling really good and I know I can do it. I would be super stoked if I could do well at this round and the last round and finish on the podium as one of the fastest in the country.”
Boyd’s teammate and good friend Renae hasn’t let the fact she is one of the youngest girls competing in the 16-and-over series deter her.
The qualified bank teller and Year 12 student finished a commendable 9th at the first round on her CRF250.
“It’s my first year in the championship, so I was stoked when I finished 9th against the fastest girls in Australia,” Evans said.
“I haven’t been on my bike for about four weeks because of mechanical issues with it, but I have worked hard to stay fit by running, swimming and gym work.
“I can’t wait for this weekend.”
Evans said the support she gets from Australian owned and operated Rampant Clothing Company (www.rampantriders.com), which is based in Queensland, is one of the main things that keeps her pushing hard.
“There’s a lot of travel involved in this sport and trying to fit riding in around school and work is really hard,” Evans said.
“But Erin from Rampant will ring me and say ‘we’re all thinking of you, man, and best of luck this weekend’.
“That’s the kind of support that keeps you going and makes you feel good.”
