Gippsland conquers 2013 TRI Region Challenge at Broadford

The annual Tri Region Challenge was held at the State Motorcycling Complex at Broadford on the 16th and 17th of February in dry hot and dusty conditions.

For the first time, the event was held at the beginning of the year rather than the end of the year between Victorian Gippsland, Northern and Western regions.

With the 2013 Victorian Motocross season starting, the event was eagerly attended by riders for grading purposes before the commencement of this year's championship rounds. Juniors competed on the Saturday, while seniors competed on the Sunday.

The induction of 'cloudentries' enabled competitors to enter online for the event (www.cloudentries.com.au), with 276 competitors taking advantage of the new system. The system allows a competitor to know straight away if their entry has been received, no waiting for Australia Post to deliver their entry.

In addition, clubs using the system will be able to cap classes. Moreover, if a riders name, number or sponsor is misspelled in the program, well the riders will have to double check their spelling as the system shoots out a file for the printing of a program. An exciting revelation for state motocross, hopefully clubs will adopt the system.

The Tri Region Challenge has a unique scoring system with only the first competitor over the line from each region gaining points towards the team result ensuing a fair system. As the team scoring, does not count the number of entrants per region in each class, only the first region member to see the chequered flag. Individual merit is also rewarded as usual collecting first, second and third for each class.

"MX Management consider the bringing together of the three regions as success." said MVMX representative Christine Windham, "There was huge rivalry on Saturday with the Junior participants with Northern leading at the end of that day followed by Gippsland then Western. Sunday saw the tables turned with Gippsland coming home, from Northern and Western."

In an effort to encourage new officials for motocross, Motocross Management obtained the services of veteran road race official Tony Bolin as the Clerk of Course. Tony is an approachable person who is passionate about motorcycle racing and is extremely interested into the operations of motocross. If you are interested in becoming an official, visit the Motorcycling Victoria website HERE

In the juniors, Wayde Carter dominated the 125 and the 250 A grade. Acting as one with his KTM, Carter will be looking forward to a great year before he enters the senior ranks in 2014.

Fellow KTM rider Matthew Hopkins-Talty competing in the same classes shadowed Wayde 5 out of the 6 races, as Wyatt Fogarty clinched second in the final moto to secure the third step of the podium in the 125cc. Jarrod Mason joined Carter and Hopkins-Talty on the dais in the 250cc.

Due to an error with compiled results in combined classes on MyLaps we cannot report on the other classes held on Saturday.

The senior ranks were injected with youth as junior competitors adapted to the senior pace or as in the A Grade Lites, Gippsland's KTM Australia/Bolton's KTM rider Jack Simpson looked to be inform setting the pace early and showing no weakness from his recent twelve months off due to two knee reconstructions.

He was undefeated all day dominating the under 19s and the A Grade Lites. Simpson was joined on the under 19s podium by Tomas Ravenhorst and Nathan Trigg.

Another stand out was Tristen Cachia, freshly signed to Honda the 101 machine demonstrated that 'Twisty' had quickly adapted to the bike and had picked up speed on the new machine, with a 5th and 10th in the A grade Lites, which does not reflect his early race pace. Not exactly sure what happened to Cachia, he did not compete in the final moto.

It was fantastic to see riders return from injury, Privateer Lewis Woods was also looking in form, and I believe it was his first race back from his wrist surgery last year.

Lewi wasting no time demonstrating that he has the race pace, he will improve further with more racing under his belt, and it was great to see Lewi back on a bike.

Most likely the oldest competitor in the A grade Lites, Scriven's Honda Mark Grove also made a return from a leg injury, however he was dealing with an rib injury sustained during practice earlier in the week, finishing ninth overall and managed a 5th in the second moto, he will be looking to improve his 6th placing last year in the State Championships.

Another return in the Lites was Scriven's Honda Matt Ryan. The number 4 plate made his return to motocross after having a break from the sport since last year's Victorian Titles only picking up the bike a week before the event, Matt was testing the bike in race conditions finishing 3rd, 6th, and 3rd.

With a disappointing start to the day, Nathan Trigg finished the meeting with 15th, 3rd, and 4th, the devastating first moto kept him off the box overall in the A Grade Lites. Allowing Jack Simpson, Lewis Woods and Matt Ryan complete the A grade Lites podium.

The A Lites in Victorian Motocross Championships will be action packed this year, with a few fast riders and a few sleepers will make the class both a challenge and compelling.

Dylan Long competed in the Open class on his KTM350 dominating the field in his second race meeting on the 350, with a perfect 3 wins from 3 starts finishing with a large gap from the rest of the field.

It was great to see Dion Brillanti back on a bike and racing, finishing second overall, a fast A Grade junior however his transition to the senior ranks resulted in injuries.

Alex Bolton had a glimpse of the top spot; however, his day did not go to plan being edged out of the top three by Matt Ginders on a count back. WBR Mini Freestyle rider Travis Whitten running the number 8 plate finished a consistent 7th for the day. Experienced Open Motocross competitor Kane Scanlan managed a 5th, 5th, 6th tussling with the youth injected class.

Courtney Whyte-Dennis had the goods for the first woman's moto, defeating multiple Victorian Champion Kristy Gillespie, however Gillespie would regroup and finish in a dominating form.

Sarah Stubbs had her senior debut, the youngster constantly second all day and even beating Kristy Gillespie in her first senior race. She will be one to watch in her rookie senior year. The womans class in the state titles this year will be very exhilarating; can Gillespie hold off the young charges? Can the youngsters be consistent? We will find out soon enough.

The Victorian Motocross Management Committee have scheduled the 2013 Victorian Motocross Championships. Senior Championships will be contested over 4 rounds.
Round 1: March 23/24 Blue Rock
Round 2: June 15/16 Swan Hill
Round 3: July 20/21 Ararat
Round 4: 3/4 August Outtrim.

While the Junior Championships will be contested over 3 rounds:
Round 1: April 13/14 Maffra
Round 2: 25/26 May Colac
Round 3: 13/14 July Albury.
