Top results for Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha riders at Geraldton

Posted: Friday, 13th July, 2012 : 8:30 AM - - 8,812 Reads

Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha riders converged on the Coastal City of Geraldton, five hours north of Perth, on the weekend to get some practice for the upcoming Junior and senior W.A. Motocross Championships round to be conducted at the venue later this year.

It has been twelve years since the last state round was held in the port City and riders headed to the new venue situated just east of town to get some practice at the open race meeting held for juniors on Saturday and seniors on Sunday.

Mat Fabry opened the teams account with an outstanding three rides on the fast, technical track. His good starts were the key as he took command of the first moto and went on for the win. A second place in Moto two set the stage for a thrilling finish to the day and saw a great battle bringing the crowd to their feet as Mat wound up his potent YZ 85 to snatch the final race of the day and take the overall victory.

“I was not going to be beaten today, Fabry said. “This track is awesome and my bike got better as the track got rougher."

"I’m stoked to win today,” he added.

Liam Whisler was also intent on achieving good results in the lead up to the State round after his bad luck at Chidlow a few weeks earlier. Riding his YZ 125cc machine in the 13 to U16 division he would need every bit of skill he could muster as he was giving away some power to the larger 150cc bikes.

Whisler was able to get out of the gate well in every moto to be in contention for the win and fought hard in every race claiming second outright with a 2-2-2 results.

“The track was a little weird to ride as it is fast but technical at the same time." said Whisler

"The dirt was awesome. It was real loamy and there was awesome traction,” he added

Three of the Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha Senior riders made the trip north to race on Sunday. YZ450F mounted Daniel Strickland finally got the monkey off his back to claim a third place podium in the Pro Open division.

After moving up to the Pro ranks this year he has struggled a little to get on the pace of the front runners suffering but his performance on the weekend was a step in the right direction.

“Today was my best ride this year, so that was good." said Strickland. "This new circuit evened out the field a little as most of us have not raced here before and I really like the concrete start gates."

"I know how to get my YZ450 out quickly and that makes life much easier during the race." he continued.

"My fitness is good and once I can work out the arm pump issue my speed will pick up,” a happy Strickland concluded.

The team’s newest rising star Kyle Webster was the standout on the day. The sixteen year old who has just moved up to the senior ranks set a blistering pace and put all on notice he will be a major force in years to come.

The pocket rocket did double duties and rode both the YZ250F and YZ450F classes on the day. Over enthusiasm which lead to crashes in the first race on both bikes saw him narrowly miss the podium by just a few points.

But in the feature race at the end of the day Kyle unleashed a near perfect ride in the fifteen minute Moto to take second place overall beating some of W.A.’s top riders.

“I love the YZ450F, it is just awesome to ride. This track suited my style and riding the two classes meant I was able to stay in the zone all day as the races came around pretty quickly." stated Webster

“Though I made a few mistakes in the racing, I will take what I have learned and improve from here on. It was cool to have a good ride in the feature race as I made a good start and just kept pushing for the whole race” he concluded.

Ash Whisler’s day was less than he had hoped for. The YZ250F rider has been a pillar of consistency so far this year but a few small crashes on the day kept him just off the podium and a crash whilst in second of the feature race just topped off his mediocre day.

“It’s fine,” Whisler had to say. “It’s all about riding the track for the next state round and today’s results, though less than I had hoped for, weren’t too bad as I got a good look at the circuit and know what I have to do in a couple of weeks’ time when we return.”

Stickland was pleased with how the whole team performed throughout the day.

“Today capped off a great weekend for the teams." stated the team manager. "All our riders did a fantastic job and we got some good data on bike set up and race lines."

Kyle’s pace was unbelievable and once we can calm him down a little and his race craft improves he will be a championship contender for sure." Strickland concluded.
