Gillman Speedway To Host Tribute Meeting For Len Bowes.

Gillman Speedway will honour legendary Adelaide sidecar rider Len Bowes at its Classic Championship meeting in October.
The annual Gillman Classic Championship meeting marks the transition between the Sunday morning winter practice sessions and the Saturday night summer season, and is always on the last Saturday night in October. Next season that date is October 27.
Every year the meeting also pays tribute to a rider or official of yesteryear and this year's special guest will be Len Bowes.
Bowes was the 1968 Australian Sidecar Champion, but also won State Championships in all the mainland States, winning in South Australia in 1962, 69 & 74; Victoria in 1963, 66 & 68; New South Wales in 74 & 75; Western Australia in 74 & 75; and Queensland in 1961.
A number of Bowes' fellow riders from the 1950s, 60s and 70s are expected to attend, with New South Wales legend Doug Robson the first to say he'll be there.
Complementing the Classic meeting will be a social night/bbq at the track the night before (Friday night, 26 October).
The dates for the summer season were also announced last month and can be seen on the calendar page of the Gillman Speedway website.
Last season was another successful season with some of the best sidecar racing anywhere in the nation with the country's best riders contesting the State Sidecar Championship, two rounds of the Ikon Suspension Sidecar Grand Slam and other major events throughout the season. The Australian Solo Grand Final was also an absolute cracker and of course, the Leigh Adams Tribute meeting saw a number of International riders competing.
"We had a great season" said Speedway Manager Dave Parker. "The sidecars were great as always, but we'd like to also get better fields of Solos and we are looking into that at the moment."
Last season also saw a number of major off-track improvements to the Stadium with the terraced hill, airfence and improved canteen and another winter of hard work starts soon with covered pit bays one of the first projects.
While there is work going on at the venue during the off season there will still be the usual winter practice days on the first Sunday of each month, starting on May 6.
