The North West Motorcycle club consider Women's Class for KTM Hattah Desert Race

THE KTM Hattah Desert Race is recognised as one of the toughest and most popular off-road races on the racing calendar. A women's class has not been run before in the desert race which is run through the Mallee scrubland near Mildura on July 7-8.

With interest from women competing in the Victorian Off-Road Championship and the assistance of Motorcycling Victoria, the push for a Women's class has started.

Gary Leeson President of North West Motorcycle club has said if we had enough interest we would certainly welcome and consider running a ladies class.

The North West Victorian Motorcycle Club has hosted the Hattah Desert Race in its current format for more than 10 years.

The race is fought out over eight laps. For 2012 The KTM Hattah Desert Race Track Committee intends to lengthen the total distance of the track to approximately 38kms which was its original length, through unique Mallee scrubland, which includes everything from tight, technical sections winding through trees to wide open blasts through open paddocks and sand hills.

The Women's class would be run in the Clubman class running 4 laps of the 38km track approximately 2hrs.

Peta Thomas, Manager of Female Participation at Motorcycling Victoria said: "I think it would be great to see a Women's class run.

"It looks like such an exciting and tough event. This is a great opportunity to get more women involved in a prominent off-road event.

"I would hope this then translates into an increase of the numbers of female participants in our Victorian Off-Road Championships. I am more than happy to do what I can to help promote and encourage more female entries" she concluded.
