Friendly Leading Senior Constable Kenneth Dwight from the Woods Point Police station in Victoria has been in contact again to inform all the trail bike riders that frequent his patch about some of the goings on around the place; we will let SC Ken take it from here.
"Well summer is over and we appear to have survived again at Woods Point. Numbers over the Christmas New Year Period appear to have been down a bit this year, maybe it was the wet weather. There have been a few washouts, rockslides on a few tracks with the usual trees down across tracks as well.
Fortunately DSE have worked hard and dozed some of the main ones cleaning them up. The Black River Track down near the river is a bit of a mess and difficult to navigate, Charles Road near the Point has a few old trees across up the top near Matlock track but Ryan’s is good as is Pages Track, Moonlight. Donald Track from Mt. Terrible is an abomination and I wouldn’t recommend anyone using it.
DSE is still in conference with stakeholders about Abbott’s Creek track and it remains closed at this time. Jamieson Licola Road is ok at the moment but will be subject to closure by Mansfield Shire after autumn. I have asked the Shire and DSE to signpost all the smaller tributary tracks off this road to assist users in avoiding the very stiff fine for using this road when closed in winter.
On a sad note two more motor bike riders have died in the area in the past couple of months, both on road bikes and on good roads in good conditions, it only takes a small mistake no matter how experienced a rider you are and you are dead. Our statistics for serious injury collisions in the Mansfield PSA are up higher than for the same time last year and guess who features in the most accidents, that’s right Trail Bike Riders.
It appears also that people are not reporting the collisions to the nearest Police Station but after attending for medical treatment nearer home. Riders are leaving themselves open to a charge for failing to report an accident, which must be done if injuries are received. I understand that when you are in the back of the Chopper being Air Lifted this may be difficult but in these case's Ambulance Vic will take care of it.
I am addressing all those guys who limp home and then find that TAC will not pay unless the prang is reported. The time may come when we will not accept this unless an attempt is made to get Police to attend the accident in the first instance.
Downloadable Trip Intention form on the Victoria Police Website. This form is a wonderful tool for your trip and can be found at this link: http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=23653
This letter and other information can also be found at the Victoria Police My Place Website for Woods Point using this link: http://www.vicpolicenews.com.au/myplace.html then search the post code 3723.
If you get into trouble use Channel 7, 8 or 5 on your CB Radio, someone will hear you.
Have safe and enjoyable Easter; hope to see you up in the mountains.
