Demolition GAS Honda’s Wayne Maxwell, has pipped reigning Australian Superbike Champion and Team Suzuki rider Josh Waters to pole position by one - one thousandth of a second in qualifying for round one of the Viking Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island.
The two riders battled throughout free practice and qualifying, and look set to continue their on-track tango when races kick off on Sunday.
Now leading the 2010 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), Maxwell was pleased with his one point and pole position.
“To be leading the Championship with one point, Demolition GAS Honda, hats off to them they’ve worked tirelessly,” Maxwell said.
“The bike has been moving along a treat, we haven’t had much of an opportunity on these new tyres and to come out here and get on pole and be consistently fast all weekend – I couldn’t be happier.”
With riders and teams appearing to struggle on the new Series control tyres, neither Maxwell nor Waters were overly concerned coming into Sunday’s races.
“The tyres are the same for everyone - I can’t say I enjoy riding around two seconds off my lap record but it’s the same tyre for everyone,” Maxwell said.
“It’s going to be a tough race no doubt, it’ll come down to whoever is smartest and whoever manages their tyres the best and set up.”
Although slightly disappointed, Waters remained positive and was looking forward to the battle ahead.
“One - one thousandth of a second, I feel a little bit robbed but he deserved it!” Waters said.
“It’s going to be close, and to be honest at the minute my main concern is Wayne, so I just need to try harder tomorrow
“The bike feels really good, and everyone has to ride on the same tyres so we’re all on an even footing really.
“We’ll just have to see what weather we get thrown at us tomorrow, I know the bike is good in the wet and that it’s also good in the dry so I feel like I can ride both conditions.
“Wayne is really strong around this track, and it’s one of my favourite tracks and I think I can have a good race tomorrow and I’ll just have to try my hardest.”
The Australian Superbike Championship will share the spotlight with the World Superbike riders on Sunday, with their two races scheduled in for the prime time.
Meanwhile, Christian Casella onboard a Triumph Daytona took out race one of the Australian Supersport Championship class, ahead of Brodie Waters (Suzuki) and Team Suzuki’s Troy Herfoss in an action packed race.
Herfoss was forced back into third place after leading for most of the race following a run-in on the main straight in the final seconds of the race.
In the Australian Superstock 600 class, Carew Dickinson (Yamaha) has won the first round of the Series, and sits on 56 points ahead of Michael Jones (Yamaha) who is on 51 points and equal with Aaron Morris (Yamaha) who is in third place.
Robbie Phillis made it three races from three onboard his Suzuki GSX 1166 to take out the first round of the Australian Historic Championship, and is now 15 points clear of second place.
