Factory Suzuki Pro Lite rider Luke Burkhart is making a strong recovery after recent surgery to repair a damaged thumb that saw the super fast Kiwi forced to make an early withdrawal from the Nokia MX Nationals.
Since undergoing surgery 4 weeks ago Burkhart has spent time catching up with friends and generally doing things that he is unable to do when fully committed to his job of racing the Pro Lites for the factory backed Suzuki race team.
"For the first 3-4 weeks after surgery i had a fair bit of pain so there wasn't a hell of a lot i could do with myself except catch up with people and do some things we don't get time to do when in full swing race season," Burkhart told Fullnoise.
"Three weeks ago i started training on stationary cycles and going for decent walks to get my body livened up and ready to start hammering it again. For the last week I've had enough movement out of my fingers to be at the gym everyday doing a lot of core training as well as good sessions on the treadmills as well, its feeling really good getting back into it a decent training program," he added.
For now the focus has shifted to competing in the New Zealand Nationals which begin in late September.
"Being that i hurt myself mid season its been like a small off season for me so I'm looking forward to a strong showing in the NZ Nationals and carrying my conditioning straight into the start of 2008.
"There has been a lot of stuff going on around the world this year for New Zealand motorsport with some of the guys smokin em' all over the show, to say its been motivating for me would be an understatement as I'm absolutely pumped about getting back to the races. I'm hungrier than ever to go further and get back on the podium before the season is out! "At this stage ill be riding the RM-Z450 for Team Suzuki at the NZ Nationals and with a totally revamped set up with the team, between myself and Daryl Hurley its looking to be a super exciting championship.
"I will also be representing Shift, DC Shoes, Motul Oils, Bridgestone Tyres, Alpinestars, Pro Circuit, Tag Metals, DID Chains, Scott Goggles and One Industries, so thanks a lot to all of you and I'm looking forward to putting it all out there for you guys," he concluded.
The New Zealand Motocross Nationals take place over 4 rounds in the coming months and with a small contingent of Australian riders, such as Cameron Taylor once again showing interest in competing it is shaping up to be a tough series.
