Chad Reed back on top in New Zealand

Posted: Saturday, 21st November, 2009 : 9:00 PM - - 8,146 Reads

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed has demonstrated his great form once again with a clean sweep of the Quad Challenge final at the penultimate round of the Monster Energy Super X Championship at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, New Zealand tonight.

12,800 fans were treated to a great night of racing for the first ever New Zealand round of the Monster Energy Super X with the Open and 250cc class racing the exciting Quad Challenge final format. The Open class raced against each other in four, six lap sprints with five minutes rest between each race and the 250cc class raced four, five lap sprints.

All riders were desperate to grab maximum points before the series finale in Brisbane on December 5, which led to fast and determined racing by all competitors. The first six lapper saw Reed take the first holeshot and win, which left Motorex KTM’s Tye Simmonds in second and Woodstock Honda Thor Racing’s Daniel Reardon in third.

Cool Air Conditioning Kawasaki’s Craig Anderson took the holeshot in the second and CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Jay Marmont and Reardon crashed on the first turn. Simmonds rode out to an early lead but was overtaken by Reed mid way through the final. Shift Motul Suzuki’s, Matt Moss, who claimed the 250cc class championship in Sydney last week finished third. Moss decided to test himself in the Open class considering the NZ round did not count toward the championship for his class.

Reed took the holeshot again in the third race and never looked back to take the win. Reardon finished in second and Pacific Ink Coastal KTM High Roller Energy Team’s Daniel McCoy took third.

Reardon took the fourth and final holeshot, but Reed once again took the lead early and finished first. Moss took second and Reardon finished third.

Round honours went to Reed with Simmonds second and Reardon third. Marmont who lead the championship going into the round had a very unfortunate night and had a terrible crash in the fourth final which put him out the race. He managed to walk off the track, but was in a lot of pain.

“It’s so great that we have been able to bring the Monster Energy Super X to New Zealand and it is really good to get the win tonight. I wasn’t on top of my game at the start of the series and these guys really caught me off guard in the first few rounds. I have found my form now and I am pumped to be going into the finale in Brisbane leading the championship,” said Reed after the race.

New Zealand rider, Michael Phillips, took out the 250cc class final after banging bars with the only Australian rider in the field, Pacific Ink Coastal KTM High Roller Energy Team’s Danny Anderson. Phillips, who just wrapped up the New Zealand Motocross Championship last week, took the overall win after two wins and two second places in the Quad Challenge with Anderson taking out second and local Hamilton rider, Jesse Wiky, pleasing the crowd by finishing third.
