Quick Chat with 2010 Motocross Lites Champ PJ Larsen

Quick Chat with 2010 Motocross Lites Champ PJ Larsen

By: Aaryn Minerds

Posted: Monday, 2nd August, 2010 - -

PJ Larsen headed over to Australia at the end of last year for a guest ride at the final round of the SuperX series held in Brisbane, after heading back to the states and not being able to secure a top ride over there he took up the offer to come back out to Australia and ride the KTM 250F for the new Factory KTM team over now being ran by the guys from JDR.

From the word go PJ has been impressive to say the least, showing blistering speed at the first round at Horsham and continuing that on the whole way through the championship. A few of the locals were able to match his outright speed at times and by the end of the season a few looked like they could and did step it up to put some pressure on the American, by that time however it was too late and PJ Larsen wrapped up the 2010 Championship with a full days racing remaining at the last round at Coolum.

I was lucky enough to catch up with PJ before he jetted back over to the states to rest up a little before getting back into some serious riding ready to come out for a full season of SuperX in 2010.

Fullnoise: How does it feel to win the Australian national motocross championship?

PJ: It feels pretty good you know any professional championship you can win in your career is a big accomplishment. The whole JDR KTM team have put in a lot of effort this year. It was a big team effort and everyone pitched in to accomplish it, we had to work hard and we had our ups and downs, it was good to finally wrap it up and say we are number 1.

Fullnoise: You pretty well dominated a lot of the season, you were the fastest guy out there at most of the rounds, come the end of the season though there were a few of the Aussie boys that were able to match your laps times, how did you find the Australian riders this year?

PJ: I knew there were a lot of fast guys over here; I came pretty familiar with the Australian motocross scene last year when I came out for SuperX. I knew there were a lot of fast guys, so when I decided I was coming over here to race I did a little research on everybody, I looked at past results for guys like Kirk Gibbs and Ford Dale, a whole list of guys that went well this year.

I knew it was going to be a hard championship to win so we put our heads down and made it happen.

Fullnoise: This year we seen you onboard the KTM, is this the first time you have ridden this brand of bike, and also you changed to the new 2011 chassis for the last two rounds, did that have much to your racing in the last couple of rounds.

PJ: Yes this was my first year racing them, I just got on one in mid January and that was the first time that I have ridden one.

Yeah there was a bit of difference for us with the new bike, KTM have made a lot of big improvements to their motocross line up for next year, obviously with the linkage that is the main thing that everyone has been waiting for from KTM. I was a big change coming from the PDS system to the Linkage; obviously they have EFI on the 250F for next year. Unfortunatly we didn’t get to run them as we didn’t have the time to test and develop the motor with the new EFI, but come SuperX we will have EFI and we will have a few months of testing that we will need to get done with it.

It definitely was a big difference going from my last brand of Kawasaki who I was with for my whole career and then hoping onto a KTM. I immediately loved the bikes, everybody worked hard to make me feel comfortable on them, obviously it goes back to the team and I have to say thanks a lot for that.

Fullnoise: Where are you heading from here, are you going back to the States to get some Supercross training and catch up with the family?

PJ: I am going virtually straight back over to the states, I’ll fly back over and take a few weeks off, I have a few nagging little injuries that I need to get taken care of. I’ll probably ride some outdoors for a little bit and get a little more comfortable with the new bike, then get into some supercross once I feel comfortable.

Fullnoise: Those injuries you have, there have been some rumours going around the pits that you broke your foot or had some type of foot injury, is it a foot injury?

PJ: It is an ankle injury, I’m not really sure what’s wrong, and I wouldn’t go to the hospital to have X-rays because I didn’t want to know. It has been a nagging injury since I have had it, it’s been sore riding the Coolum track for the two days as rough as it was and with the deep sand I twisted it a few times, so it’s not feeling to good right at the moment.

Fullnoise: Looks like you and the team have a bit to celebrate, again congratulations on the win, It was great to see you over here racing and look forward to seeing you back here for SuperX.

PJ: Thank you.
